The devastation that's been visitied by Katrina on the southern USofA is absolutely devastating, and my thoughts are with those who have been affected by this disaster.

New Orleans happens to be one of my two favourite places in the world.

Here are some links to some images of the devastation, for those who are so interested. Me ... I'm almost in tears ....

This is the first i've heard of it.

This is the risk you take when you live in an area prone to cyclones and a city built on a swamp.

I've been through a few cyclones so i know what it's like, inlcuding one as big as this one. But a 10 metre storm surge is quite amazing.

I feel for those killed. The city can be rebuilt, but the lives are lost forever, memories live on...

Killakoala, they had oil rigs broken from their moorings out in the ocean swept onto shore and into bridges.

Biloxi Bridge / Highway 90 has been destroyed aswell.

The UN is now claiming Katrina to be the most devastating natural disaster in living memory, more than the Tsunami. I gather they must be counting dollar cost rather than lives lost.

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=59358

Apparently it was only the mass evacuations that saved hundreds of thousands of deaths.

The scale of this disaster won't be known for some time. Whole communities that refused to leave have been destroyed by a nine metre storm surge, almost twice the hieght of the tsunami.

So register then. It's the Dallas News site; a newspaper somewhere in status between the SMH and Sydney Telecrap.
