Hi, I'm looking to get a D70s very soon. I have old 35-70 and 70-210 lenses from my film SLR. Should I get the kit lens or just the body and use these until i've saved my pennies for the 24-120?

Get the camera with kit lens (18-70)
You won't save much $$$ by buying the D70s body only thru your local shop with Maxwell/ Nikon stock.

Hardware, I would recommend getting the 18-70 lense. I've just had to buy one as a temporary replacement for my other lenses which are in for repairs.

It's a pretty good lense and would also compliment the range that you already have giving you wide angle out to 18mm.

I'm pretty sure the 18-70 is not backwards compatible with the F601 but if anyone can confirm or deny this might help me make up my mind too.

It's the DX lens, can be mounted on the F601 but won't do justice!

it should work on the F601, just not as well as it will the D70.

When you say it won't work as well what do you mean. Optically or mechanically(auto focus etc.)

optically. what's known as the "image circle" is much smaller in DX lenses compared to whats often called 'normal 35mm lenses'.

In other words - the image/light projected on to the film/sensor plane isn't as big with DX lenses - the projected image is large enough to cover the whole area of a DX-sized sensor, but not large enough to cover a full 35mm film frame. If you put the 18-70mm on to a film body, and use it at the wide end, the picture will turn out as a image in a circle with severely vignetted edges (an interesting experiment anyway).

The smaller image cicle projected by DX lenses (which is the perfect size for DX sized sensors) allows Nikon to get more lens in for less weight as the glass doesn't generally need to be as big.
