What a shame "attractive" doesn't mean 'cheap'. For a small car, you pay a hefty premium for the savings on the petrol bill. Fantastic idea (and I secretly wouldn't mind having one) but the technology is still bloody expensive. I wonder if the Prius and it's Honda Civic Hybrid cousin might become the beta videos of the future - sandwiched between conventional petrol engines and hydrogen-powered units. The big boys (Mercedes-Benz and BMW in particular) are well-advanced in hydrogen vehicle research and testing and I suspect the petro-electric combos might get left behind before they even get off the ground. (PS - I was reading somewhere recently about Robin Williams' plan: the US and the rest of the western world should get together and tell the Saudis "We'll pay you $10 a barrel for your oil and not a penny more. If you don't want to accept that, go find someone else to buy it!') Simon

According to this site as of Monday 5 Sep the lowest US price was in Washington state at US 295.6 cents per gallon. This is about 49% up on the same time last year.
295.6 US cents = 385.5 AU cents 1 gallon = 3.7854 litres So I make that about 101.8 cents per litre. And the yanks are used to CHEAP petrol with their big gas guzzling cars. Peter

I heard a good theory the other day. The US is happy to pay what ever it costs just now (around $70) for every barrell of crude oil. The cunning plan is to use up reserves in the middle east, then fully exploit the gulf of mexico reserves, further adding to the US global power.
Not so much a conspiracy theory, just simple economics. Apparently China likes the concept also, and will be a major player in the oil world in the next decade or so with their own reserves. I prefer the Robin Williams idea 2x D700, 2x D2h, lenses, speedlights, studio, pelican cases, tripods, monopods, patridges, pear trees etc etc

It maybe all you can get from what you drive and be happy. If you go too small, you may compromise safety (when hit by a big one). What makes me feel better are the $1000.00+ I save on insurance. Thank you not NRMA!

I think you guys are complaing a bit early, this isn't so bad. One of the cars at my place has a full size motor, not those little 5 and 6 litre V8s. Last time I did the calculation it was getting less than 4mpg if I was moving, but the really telling part was it chewed through a lot idling, so when petrol was 80c a litre it cost me $1 every two minutes the car was turned on. Haven't done the calculation since then, think I would be a little concerned to now

I'm in Samoa at the moment.Petrol prices are about 15% less than in Aust. Average wages here are about 20-30% of Aust and much of the population do not have any income at all. What is noticeable though is that there are a lot of cars per head of population. They have got used to the high prices of everything including petrol. We are probably not that badly off in Aust compared to countries such as Samoa.
Water is also very expensive here as is the crap tinned and frozen food I have been living off over the past two weeks. Its all relative. Peter Mc Nikon & Olympus
Spare a thought I just filled up my 240 litres of fuel tanks in my 4X4 to head bush for the holidays. It sure as hell grabs you that fuel price. Right in the back pocket and HARD. But when you rely on the breaks to recharge the sanity and 'social' battery it is a cost that must be borne. I hope the shot opportunities will be worth it! See you all when I return. Hopefully with some 'embedded' images to show thanks to stubbsy's explanation.

Don't think so! even if it's at $4.00/l still heap of cars on the road, especially with the thirsty one! Birddog114

Just look at the double whammy - everyone is talking about how much more it is costing them to fill their tanks! Petrol increases hit you hard in other directions as well - food up, white goods up, air fares up and so on.

I'm sorta glad my V8 4WD is off the road at present.
Only paying for the V6 4WD's fuel at present Canon 20D and a bunch of lovely L glass and a 580EX. Benro tripod. Manfrotto monopod. Lowepro and Crumpler bags. And a pair of Sigma teleconverters, and some Kenko tubes. http://www.dionm.net/
Here ya go guys.

$1.35 per l?
That's cheap, my old man in Melbourne payed $1.42 That was for I think 95ron, optimax was even more expensive. I bet my friend now regrets spending $28k on his nissan skyline a few years back. I'm quite happy that it only costs me $20.50 to get to work each week. Darryl (aka Kipper)

I did. Started riding my pushbike to Uni. First day I came off and broke my arm. These petrol prices are dangerous!!
hARDWARE,
Try one of these. There is no falling off!! http://www.greenspeed.com.au/ Oh yeah, contrary to what some might believe, cars do not drive over these things. If anything, they give them a wider berth. Cheers
