What Would Be a Reasonable Price for 80-200mm f2.8 ED lensWhat would you expect to pay secondhand for a 80- 200mm f2.8 ED lens secondhand in reasonable condition?
Is the VR version much better than this lens? Regards Tony

$700.00 -800.00 The 70-200VR is with AF-S and lot faster in focussing than the 80-200 AF-D, Quality of glass and other bits are the same. Last edited by birddog114 on Wed Sep 07, 2005 6:07 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Just out of curiosity, who is the seller. I have purchased one from someone now calling himself bazthetrader.
I had requested insured postage and paid extra for it, the lense was damaged during postage and have not received any replies from him regarding the insurance as repairs look to cost me about $200. I have also read some of his other feedback and there have been a number of cases of non-replies. Ray
thats not good to hear, it might be an insurance claim for auspost.
make sure you keep all the packaging as evidence that the item was packaged properly when the item was sent. so whats makes you say it cost 200$ to repair did you get a quote? 700-1000 two touch 400-700 push pull 1000+ afs version all depends on their condition of course Life's pretty straight without drifting

The lense was placed in the leather Nikon case without any padding whilst the case itself was well bubblewrapped.
It was dispatched via Ausexpress Post. The quote was from the Camera Clinic. Damage was to the filter ring and AM ring. Total cost of parts was $15. The rest is for labour!!!!! Also got my other lense in there at the moment. Cost for repairs to that is $470. Ray
ouch!
better file a claim quickly Ray, keep trying to get a hold of the seller. so what happen to the other lenses you have a repair bill 470 $for? Life's pretty straight without drifting

Age mate, it was my 24-85mm f2.8. I've had it for 4 years, taken it everywhere with work, even had it with me in East Timor so its taken a few knocks. Gotta be expected though. However, should be better than new when I get it back. However, as a result, I had to spend another $500-odd bucks for a 18-70mm kit lens otherwise I would not have had anything to use for the weekend or my trip. Ironically, I'm about to leave without the two lenses I wanted. Ray
I love my old one touch 80 200 nikkors I now have 2 and sold a third to a friend for $700 recently.
I honestly cannot see the value in VR, but this is just a personal thing. I bought one 80-200 F2.8 for $50 at CC's it cost me $300 to get it fixed up but still a great lens at a great price. cheers doug
Have you ever shot with the 70-200VR? Its construction and its AF-S will beat any other Nikkor lenses mile away, Though the glasses of the 80-200 AF-D are great but compare to the 70-200Vr are not comparable, the 80-200 AF-D or D or push pull are the great Nikkor glasses in the past but not with today technology. With today modern DSLR bodies, you need fast AF and S, then you'll be appreciated what the value of money which you're invested into. Birddog114

I missed getting his name (had to go training) so the auction is over now.... I'm leaning towards waiting and getting the VR model. BTW there is a D70 for sale on ebay finishing at 8.20pm roughly and it is only up to $850 at the time of this post. It is meant to be located in Sydney and post of $45. No lens and claiming it is new.
Sounds like a potentially good buy for someone. T
That's another HKG seller, price is not staying at that level in last couple minutes. Birddog114

They're HOngkong seller but may have good in Sydney, and odd thing is he only sells the memory card and one D70 body, perhaps NOS.

We become patient and wait... just like when you are composing a shot. You go too quickly you miss the detail, you don't go quickly enough you lose the shot Timing is everything, why would you buy an item when it is in very short supply? It just makes prices go crazy. Wait till they make some more and flood the market again, then the retailers will start competing for the business. T
TonyH, Agreed, but the future of it, is not brighter! stock was shortage since January this year and no new production since Nov or Dec 04. Don't know exactly what Nikon is doing and rumor is Nikon won't run any production of it until or after Mar 06 + the backorder of this lens across five continents now are estimated over 10K units, again rumors are rumors. Perhaps there are new lines of lenses from Nikon on the horizon. Birddog114

Ive got both. AF is noticeably faster on the 70-200 compared to 80-200ED, not to mention MUCH quieter. 70-200 has nicer handling than 80-200ED, 80-200AFS was larger/heavier than 80-200ED Focus-stop buttons and ability to touchup focus manually on AFS lens is very handy. VR is definitely useful in certain situations such as panning, lowish light, too much coffee 70-200 is much sharper (IMHO) than 80-200ED at combination of longzoom/wideopen/minfocus. 80-200 reportedly has lower issues with lens-flare. If you have the $$$ and can justify it to yourself, the 70-200 is the better lens IMHO. Rob Smile; it makes people wonder what you have been up to.
Rob, Pity!!!!! where can you find a good source of the 70-200VR today? I sold many of the Sigma 70-200 instead of in the last few weeks Birddog114

Yes, but it's not a good source after shipping cost and GST, landed in Australia. P.S: around AU$2600.00 landed. Birddog114

I love my 80-200 AFS. I tried the 80-200 AFD but found the focus was way too slow and clunky. VR would be nice but you definately pay for it in the 70-200.... if you can get your hands on one.
Second hand the AFS goes for about twice that of the AFD. I payed $1,500 for my AFS and have not regreted it at all! I take lots of sports shots and take this lens everywhere
