Wish me luck

Postby embi on Thu Sep 08, 2005 10:42 pm

Yesterday I decided to take a gamble and ring a local rag about getting some regular PJ work.

The first paper I rang I got straight onto the editor and she told me she was just in the process of sending rejection letters for the people who had just applied for a casual photographer position that they had advertised for.

We had a good chat about my experience and what she was looking for and she asked for a folio of my images and a bit of a CV.

So last night I went through some pics and sent it off.

Her last comment was "If I see another pic of a flower or someones girlfriend......" :) Needless to say I sent neither of these in my folio.

So now the waiting has begun. Its only a casual position but who knows where it may lead.

The paper is this one
"If your pictures aren't good enough, you're probably not close enough." Robert Capa.

D70 - Nikon 18-70 (Kit Lens), 50mm f1.4, 70-300G, SB-800, Manfrotto 190D tripod, 141RC head, and 676B monopod.

Go for it, it is the only way to get anywhere, knock on doors you will get 99 knock backs but as long as you knock on 100 doors one will open for you.

If you do get knocked back go out and take some PJ images set yourself assignments follow up stories and NAG people.

If you follow up the editor they will know you will follow up the story.

Let us know how you go.

Best of luck Embi. I actually read this paper (it's a local one - delivered free), so it would be great to see some published work from you in there !

Well it's been 2 days and no word (can you tell I am anxious for any news) and I haven't heard back from the editor.

Not wanting to push it I thought I'd give a quick call and just make sure that my folio made it to her inbox. All is good she has it but has been busy with deadlines. So so far so good i guess.

Well here it is.

When I spoke with her she wanted to see a few different things.

She wanted the "politician smiling as he hands over the cheque". Also the ability to capture the smile shot. No closed eyes etc so I submitted these ones from my recent xmas in July shoot. (10 points to the first to spot the celeb).

She then asked about sport images. I havent done a lot lately but the ones I have I submitted. I also submitted them because they are different I guess.

Then for the human element I submitted the following.

So please let me know honestly what you think of my submission. How does it compare to the pics the paper currently publishes??

Here is the link to the newspaper.

Hey, is the celeb the big haired one with the glasses? Seriously though, I think they're great shots for the paper. I can't see why they wouldn't select you for the job. Still got the fingers and toes crossed!
By the way Mark, sorry to go off topic, but I can only see a red cross as your avatar. :?

I rang her a few days after I sent my folio and she said she had recieved it but hadnt had a chance to look through it because of deadlines. So I figured I wouldn't push to hard straight away. Since then I have been busy with wedding stuff (My wedding is this sat) and havent had a chance to call.

I will be calling first week I return from the honeymoon though.

Birdy you beat me too it. I was just looking for the Comp 6 thread to say thanks for the arrival of the CF card. It was just delivered.

It will come in very handy indeed for the trip to NZ.

Good luck.

I applied for the same sort of position with a local newspaper a little while ago but was rejected in favour of a tafe student that wanted to do work placement. I was disappointed but oh well, The pictorial editor said she would pass on my details which i thought was just something she as a consolation measure.

but low and behold the other day I got a phone call from a woman who got my number from the editor and she wanted to see me for an interview about being the photographer for a new lifestyle magazine and another kinda of magazine that they will be producing.

So you see even if everything doesn't go to plan things like this can happen so even if you don't get the job it isn't the end of the world, though i dare say you already know that.
Are we there yet?
