Upcoming Nikon DSLRS?Guys, just a question on the next generation of Nikon DSLR's, if these become full frame will I still be able to utilise my existing Nikon lenses ? I'm looking at now buying the Sigma 70-200 2.8 lense but I've noticied alot of people mentioning the new generation bodies will be vastly different?
Thanks 5D | 16-35L | 35L | 85L | 135L | 70-200F2.8IS | 580EX

Re: Upcoming Nikon DSLRS?
Kris, Only the Sigma 'DC' lenses will vignette on a FF Dslr - if that's your concern. The 70-200 is not a DC lense and so 'should' work nicely on a FF body. Cheers Justin
So any Nikon lense that I currently own would be fine? Good.
The Sigma 70-200 would still work fine on a FF body ? I would go the Nikon route but the sample shots I've seen of this Sigma on the D70 are nothing short of amazing and given it's half the price I'd be silly not to buy it.. 5D | 16-35L | 35L | 85L | 135L | 70-200F2.8IS | 580EX

Plus Nikon DX lenses will be no good on FF Chris

You could always have a look at it through a film camera to give you an idea of what it looks like full frame.

No. The 18-70 you mention in you sig won't work properly on A FF camera. This is a moot point anyway as the "next" generation of Nikons will not be FF What the D3x, D300, D90 (picking product names out of the air) will be is anyones guess. If I'm alone in a forest and my wife is not around to hear what I say, am I still wrong ??
The Nikon DX, Sigma DC, and Canon EF-S lenses won't project an image large enough to fill a FF sensor. But even a "full-frame" lens will result in a different image on a FF vs. DX sensor.
Consider that the image projected by lenses (even the really good ones) degrades as you get further away from the centre (this is what MTF graphs are showing). With a DX sensor you don't care how bad the lens is at the edges, but once you get a FF sensor you might get a nasty surprise (depending on the lens of course). At the same time, the size of the pixels also dictates how much detail the sensor can extract from the lens. As pixels get smaller, you can find that lenses you were once happy with are now not quite as good as you would like. But on the other hand, depending on how many pixels it has, a FF sensor may have larger pixels than a DX sensor. So in the end (as with so many of these things) it's a case of wait and see how the lenses and sensors pair up when they finally arrive...
Hmm I'm a bit hesitant to go out and buy lense with news of these cameras not too far away.. I want to grab the Sigma 70-200 but why even bother?!

You buy the lens today or tomorrow or when the system is in FF, it doesn't matter, coz 100% of non DX lens will work on both format, the new Sigma DG is still work on the FF as well, you don't buy the lens which you wish, then you'll be missed out the opportunities to shoot. Techno is changing everyday, get what you can and enjoy! Birddog114

Yes you have to be carefull with the SIgma nomenclature... I got confused at first to...
DG: designed with digital in mind, items such as a AR coating on the rear element to stop reflections off the CCD affecting the image... These are full frame lenses with a image circle big enough for a 35mm sensor/film DC: Designed for the APS (2/3rds) sensors, this is sigmas DX equivelent.. Basically, if you see a DG an the same price as a non DG get the DG New page

Amen, Birdy. Why obsess about what's coming round the bend ? Enjoy the camera you have at the moment and buy what you need for it, or for the body you are looking to buy in the near future. It really don't think it matters what you buy because in 5-10 years time, technology is likely to have changed so much, FF will be like DX is now. Perhaps you should start to consider what will come after FF and purchase in readiness for that Ridiculous ? My point exactly. Dave

Even if Nikon came out with a camera with a FF 135 format digital sensor one day, your Nikkor DX lenses would still be useable --> think HSC mode on the D2X.
It would be easy for the camera to automatically recognise when a DX lens is attached and to crop from a 1.0x FF to the 1.5x DX crop. Nikon has already shown the tech works for 1.5x to 2.0x crop, don't see any reason for it not to work if 1.0x to 1.5x crop.
That makes good sense. Worry more about the quality of glass than the format of sensor. Mark Greenmantle
