D70 output is called? The way we refer to our output is of interest to me. Many people use different terminology, lets be objective and quantify the preferences of the forum. Any others you can think of pm me and I'll add it.

Shot and photo are my most common terms of phrase.
Edit : Althought evidence would support snaps too http://www.pixspot.com/thumbnails.php?album=665 Last edited by Alpha_7 on Fri Sep 02, 2005 5:30 pm, edited 1 time in total.
"Frame" and "shot" would be the most common way I refer to my "stuff".

Pic, image, capture, frame or shot.
I only consider a photograph if it's printed out. I'm a bit of a pedantic p**** Hassy, Leica, Nikon, iPhone

Cool poll!
For me the outcome of taking a shot is an image so I voted for image... However when they are printed I occasionaly refer to them as photos or photographs but more often as prints New page

'Shot' for the majority, cause I need to be for what I take!

I find myself mainly taking 'shots'.... although I did have to think about it for a minute

All except "Snap", to me it has a connotation of lesser quality so it's not very good for my ego. Come to think of it, maybe that's the one I should be using.

I have no preference so I didn't vote since there was no option for that - it's a pic one day a photo the next etc etc. Too boring to tie yourself to a "preferred" term.

Here's my uptake. I use most of those often, but in different circumstances. here is my list.
PIC - For when i am in a hurry or too lazy to type PICTURE PHOTO - For when i am talking to 'newbs' or people who think my camera uses film. PHOTOGRAPH - Used as a verb as in 'Would you like me to PHOTOGRAPH you naked?" IMAGE - When i am being arty-farty or talking to an Arts Student. SHOT - When i am wanting to sound like a Pro to impress someone, such as on this forum. Makes it sounds like i know what i am saying SNAP - When i need to take a break from PP work. 'I just need to SNAP one off.' Steve.

Upon reading the subject title, i thought this was a NEF vs Raw issue. It irks me when ppl mention "editing RAW". You can't edit 'Raw' dipshit, it's a NEF... one can "shoot Raw" but that's the extent of Rawness that's vocabularically correct. Anything should be referred to as NEF or CRW/CR2 if you shoot Canon.
In this thread's context - IMHO it's a frame. Tthe one for display on the web is an image. The one printed is a photo.
OK so I read too much into the question - it said D70 output is called...
I voted image. BUT Technically, I would have said files, or maybe data. After all, it is a digital image. Having voted and then read peoples comments, I see it has been interpreted as "What do you call what it is you take on a D70? Answering this question, I would say I take some shots, photos, maybe sometimes I take a pic. Photograph - Photo = Light response Graph = recorded on paper, film etc. Like its been graphed. Not quoted precisely from anywhere but my grey matter (what it means to me) So technically I agree the word photograph is not one that applies until our images are printed. But then are they prints? I think they are still photographs, but could be called prints as well. However, the word photograph is one that has been around for so long with roughly a standard definition, referring to grab the camera and photograph something, as the process of doing that invariably means making a "graph" of your subject - at least on film, and probably on photo paper. With the introduction of digital cameras, is this necessarily still true? As we know what the word means to us, yes it can be true. But if the use of the word becomes less popular with time, then in the changing of a generation or two we may well see the word fade into history, or fade into antiquity like film cameras may. Still a photo - the light image we see is being recorded, but as it is not an analogue graphed image we were (are) used to on film, the word photograph may become less popular. I wonder what they are teaching the kids at school on this - what the word photograph means to them? It is an interesting question and one I gave a great deal of thought to only a few weeks ago. Well done on the poll. Share what you know, learn what you don't.

The D70 output is called NEF/JPEG
Personally I don't really see the point of this thread. The D70, D2X etc all produce data either in a digital negative format eg. NEF or as a medium in which we can publish straight away on the web eg. JPEG or take to a printlab to be printed on paper. There is no difference between the output of a D70 really and an F80. The range of comments illustrate the intent of the question which was to provide some objective data on what we refer to D70 output as. Even the issue of 'output' shows some dissension that digital has created vs film. I too have a sense of using a word in context as KillaKoala succinctly stated. I tend to agree with that list. That in itself shows some sensitivity to audience when referring to 'output'. I find language interesting when such issues are raised, I am sure others don't but then that is their prerogative, although it would be interesting to know why. A bit like 'when I say a word I mean The poll is therefore of value to record members combined opinions, it might even reveal a change as DSLR Users.com incorporates more photographers from the prosumer camp and other makes. That is the intent of a poll isn't it?
Here's a bite of Lewis; "When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in a rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean--neither more nor less. "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean different things." "The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master--that's all." Can anyone explain this last "question is" quote? Dargan? Killa? Even after a really good pondering the meaning of this particular quote is lost to me. Please be gentle though Thanks Graham
Hi Graham
I think Carroll was saying many things in that quote but one meaning might be illustrated by what most politicians have learned, in that if they define the meanings of terms, they rule the roost. Look at the way the definition of employment has changed over the past twenty years. In the same way it is often said the victor decides what history is by defining it in their own terms and rewriting history. The words we use for defining output from a camera are a long bow from Alice and Humpty, I do admit, but show a light hearted jab at trying to say that one term for output should not be used by all to describe how we define the product of our cameras. If you don't use the word pic or image or photo it is immaterial to the poll. The idea of the poll is to find out the ratio of what people do use not their reasons why, although I am sure we are grateful for elicudatory comments. I didn't really want this to be a discourse on semantics but the way people interpreted 'output' shows just how tricky language can be. I did think this poll question was a bit above the trivial though. One change I should have made was digitral camera output rather than being D70 specific as the forum has a wider audience now. With best regards In the end we know Nothing, but in the meantime Learn like crazy.
