Little white eye for WB

I think I am doing something really wrong when attempting to use the little white eye for WB on the D2x (just above Nikon label).

I select PRE, then hold it till it flashes, then I press the Function button to make the 'eye' work but all I ever get is 'NoGD' and never 'GD'.

Has any one else used it? Is it accurate?

Any help appreciated.

the sensor may be dirty, the manual says wipe it down. Also it depends on what shooting bank your using in your custom controls bank A B or C may have custom settings that prevent the custom white balance being set, don't know what menu setting for sure, consult manual.

Hi Heath, I've used it also and it doesn't like low light. I would always get a no good in low light.

In brighter light it works but comparing to what the aut white balance had selected was very nominal.

I never did that way and always use the expodisc as Preset WB.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you have to fill vewfinder with white or gray to preset WB this way.For example, a sheet of plain white paper will do. Works fine with D70 and I don't see any reason why it won't work with D2X

I don't think you did the Preset WB in the right way! according to Thom ogan's guide, you can have and save same as named 5 Preset WB with the D2.

From Thom Hogan's D2x guide:

"If you wish to measure off a neutral gray or white card, frame it in the viewfinder and press the shutter release. If you want to measure only from the ambient light using the WB sensor at the front of the prism, press the FUNC button."

"If an acceptable white balance value was measured, you'll see the Good on the top LCD"

The D2 series can do the Preset WB by that way by using the WB sensor at the front of the prism.
That why I have the D2x instead of the D70

Thanks everyone. I have heard this method isn't as accurate as the white/grey card routine so I think that I will stick to the viewfinder way.
