Adam, it is available in Aus through Maxwell. ECS sell it for $365, many other retailers also sell it.
It is designed to complement the kit lens on the D50 so should match nicely with any kit lens. I know nothing of the quality. It probably doesn't have SWM, no matter what the seller is claiming as SWM (AFS is similar) is a proprietry Canon name. http://wolfeyes.com.au Tactical Torches - Tactical Flashlights Police torch rechargeable torch military torch police military HID surefire flashlight LED torch tactical torch rechargeable wolf eyes flashlight surefire torch wolf eyes tactical torchpolice torch

Stand corrected Adam, Canon referred to their USM as silent when it first came out, I incorrectly remembered that. I do remember Nikon referring to AFS with that before.
What you need is a review of that lens, will see if I can find one http://wolfeyes.com.au Tactical Torches - Tactical Flashlights Police torch rechargeable torch military torch police military HID surefire flashlight LED torch tactical torch rechargeable wolf eyes flashlight surefire torch wolf eyes tactical torchpolice torch

VK4CP,
I think you get what you pay for, but thats not to say it isnt a good value lens . This might help you decide if you want it: http://www.bythom.com/55200lens.htm
Adam, tested the Sigma yesterday, great lens, much much better choice than the 55-200 for the money, a genuine pro lens

Adam, have a look at these links for some examples of the 55-200dx.

John, from memory I believe the two kit lenses together are extremely good value when bought with the body? Is that the case?

Hi Glen, I bought mine separately. The d50 kit on ebay for $1200 and the 55-200 locally at Photocontinental for $395.
There is a kit with both lenses that Maxwell has an $1899 rrp (single lens kit $1599 rrp) and there is also a gift offer of a 70-300g if you buy the basic single lens kit before the end of September. I'm sure that I have seen the twin lens kit advertised well below the rrp, don't recall exactly but think it was around $1500. I know it was a little bit less than my kit cost. While I would love to have the pro gear to play with, I'm very happy with my kit, my skills are the limiting factor at the moment, not to mention the wallet . Cheers, John D JED

I tend to agree. I read the reviews then try the gear to make up my own mind as to what are the most important things to me and what compromises I'm prepared to make. The 55-200 isn't silky smooth to zoom, it's not as good as the 18-55 (which is very smooth) but it hasn't stopped me getting nice results and my wallet stills loves me (well almost). If you would like to try it out to see if it suits you, pm me and we'll work out something. Cheers, John D JED
