Photo Competition: Today Show

Postby Nnnnsic on Mon Oct 03, 2005 2:36 pm

Nine Network's program "Today" looks like they're running some sort of photo competition...

There doesn't look to be any sort of requirements so you really have no reason NOT to enter.

Apparently there's up to $29,000 worth in prizes, with $25,000 going to the winner and $1,000 to each runner-up... if that's enough to whet your appetite...

But, here's the catch... the competition is only good for a week.
From today 'till the 10th...

So enter now...

On the Today website, it also says that the photo must be in colour...

Now... What sort of image would appeal both to Channel 9 viewers and judges from the Photo Imaging Council of Australia

I figure if I win then they can keep the photo, but if not then they have a 800 x 600 photo that they can do what they like with. No problem from me.

I saw that clause to be more of something left over from something physical you would've sent in from snail mail.

That said, take your image, change the curves or colours a bit and the image is different from the one you've sent it.

They're not claiming in that clause that the image you submit that they own fully on a whole if you were to use it again... it seems to me they're just claiming ownership to the 800x600 version they'll be sent.

That was my take on it too mate. Personally, they can do what they like with the 800x600 version... not good for anything other than viewing on the web anyway.

I believe MHD has emailed them asking for a clarification on their expectation of the "ownership" clause.

Just wondering do they take ownership of the photo regardless ? Or only if we are one of the 5 chosen ?

regardless.

Probably submit to stock libraries and make their own money.

which is fine, but i want to know whether their "ownership" infact extends to the original intellectual property / copyright i have over my own images, ie, can i continue to own my image, attempt to sell it, sell it, enter it in other comps, print it, have it on my site, call it MINE, without them getting litigious :)

I know jack all about copyright law

Fair point...

I submitted a photo late last night, I figured that if I won $1000 it was more then the photo was worth to me... didn't think hard enough about them "owning" my photo regardless of if I won...

Will be interesting to see what the top 5 are anyways.

yeah if it was ONLY if you won, then no dramas, cheers for your business, here have the photo and thanks for the $25k im off to antarctica ! hehehehe

but yeah ... mhd has emaield them to find out what they actually mean.

The term "property" is really very loose.
Do they mean the physical jpeg file? (which can easily be copied to a bitmap, does it then still the same?, or modify a level slightly and ressave yoru jpeg, and therefore you have a different piece of art in any case?) Its all gray law that to which end points arent known until someone tried to bend it in court ... so what we really need to know is what their intentions are and whether theyre likely to get spendy with their lawyers if you went against their intentions :)

anyone nkow if we can submit two?

it doesnt say anywhere expressly ... it does say "submit your best" ... but i wonder if they'll actually allow multiples.

I don't think they'd get very far with stock libraries with 800x600 images...

They say that the entries are judged daily and when you submit a photo - it actually asks you as to whether you want to submit another entry... The Ts & Cs don't rule out multiple entries per person...

I'll probably be submitting one a day...

It gives you the options, once you submit one , to submit another. So yeah I'd say so, otherwise there entryform is misleading.

Just spoke with Joshua, technical director of today show.

he stated that their claim of ownership does not extend to copyright ownership, it only means that whatever youve sent them, they can and will use on their own websites and marketing material if they choose to.

he stated they do not care what we do with our own images and they have no interest in copyright ownership per se.

He also said that to be frank, they really dont care about the thousands of entries, its only relevant for the duration of the competition.

So, submit!

im wondering, do you reckon sending in lots will kill chances at all?

ie, theyll only accept one per person
or conversely, if you submit all your good ones on one day, you only get judged on that particular day, reducing your exposure / chances to another days round of voting?

Yep... pretty much what Darb said

Hi!

You're right, the return of the photos regulation is a hangover from postal
competitions!

To clarify the copyright rules, all Channel Nine is doing is seeking to use
the photo in connection with the competition. Neither Channel Nine or the
Photo Imaging Council are seeking to own the copyright except for in
connection with this competition. Good luck with your entry!

thanks for the flattery but dont be silly, submit!

ive seen some pics win and thought "umm what the heck" ... but different people like different stuff. Some of the most simple ideas that some people submit often win, just because theyre unique and thoughful. (or paid off the judges, muahah)

This comp is easy.

Remember, it's channel Nine.

Just submit something that would be similar to a submission to Australia's most pointless video show (ie: child or pet or both) and you are pretty much a winner.

If you have kids or pets then photograph them doing something silly or dumb, submit and you will give yourself a great chance of $1000....

(Does that sound a bit patronising towards Ch9?.... Ah, who cares.)

The prizes might be greater, but the overall chance of winning is so much smaller. Given a choice I'd chose the 1 in 40 chance of winning a Benro Tripod over a 1 in 8000 chance of winning the $25000. Lucky for us we can enter both, would be a quiet a laugh in a winning challenge pick won the $25k too!

No - not at all... I'd already decided on that strategy...
I have a kid and a pet in the same photo

But seriously... you have to get past the judges first, before they put it to Joe Public... they might have slightly more demanding standards...

None are mine, but I believe they may have shown my Pelican shot in the previews one day. Didn't see it myself - someone at work asked if it was mine and when I showed them the original they reckoned it was.

The baby pic looks like it's had some seriously bad post-processing. It's way oversharpened and had noise reduction run through it. Cute pic though.

The cat is pretty good.

The girl on a bench is a good shot but i get the feeling that she is going to slide off it.

The fairground wheel thungy makes me feel sick. There are no sharp-in-focus elements in the image at all so it looks handheld. A good image though.

The bee is shit. There have been images ten times better on this forum by the macro followers.

I bet the kid or the cat wins the money. (Ch9 dig again) :)
