I heard just today from my favorite local shop that Nikon may not announce it anytime soon.

Mike, That what I have on my calendar from recently workshop and product training with local Nikon channel. Normally, prior to products announce, we will have the workshop and training/ introduction to new product. I hate DPR, lot of guys there, get no job but rich of imagination and like to stir up the community. Will they buy the D200 once its first release? Big No! Will they rant when the product revealed? Big Yes! Will the D200 make their photos better? They don't know! Will the D200 change their way of shooting? They don't see! Unless there's something I don't know or miracle happens Birddog114

Just to add more fuel to the fire here is what i wrote to Bjorn Rorslett recently. He got one of the first D2X's available and seems privy to much of Nikon's developments.
Bjorn Any inside information of what the D200 might configure like and when is release date. I have money burning a hole in my pocket and want something better featured faster focus and more resolution. Cheers mate marco His reply: "in december" otherwise I cannot tell Bjørn Rørslett -NN/Nærfoto Org.no. NO 976 015 045 MVA Professional Nature Photographer, Ph.D. Kongsberggt. 13, N-0468 Oslo, Norway Now you could interpret 'otherwise I cannot tell' as I'm bound to say nothing. There are probably alot of other interpretations too! But, my heart hopes it's coming in December. Get ready for my order Birddog! cheers marco
Birdy ... I believe you got DPR figgered out my friend!

I see he did not commit his answer to a specific year, either Dave

I'd just like to see it come in under $2000 when it finally arrives. Cant afford the D2X this year.

I wish it comes true! then the D70 get killed The D70s body (Maxwell stock) is at around AU$1500.00. Birddog114

Hahah... No, I'm still happy with my D70. Just adding to the speculation. Hehe... Actually, there will probably be a D90 released - it will slot in between the D70s and the D200. And there may be a D3 announced at Photokina 2006 (might be FF)
with the rate of advancement in megapixel count and functionality for the cheaper cameras out there, one would hope that the DSLR ranges will stay at similar prices but push the specs up to remain competitive.

I think something like this might happen:
The D70/D70s will be dropped from the lineup sometime next year. The new lineup will become: D50 - Entry Level - $600-$800 D90(?) - Prosumer - $1000-$1200 D200 - Prosumer/Pro - $1800-$2400 D2Hs - Fast frame rate but will fade from the lineup D2x - Top Pro body but will drop in price - $3800-4200 D3x(?) - New top end body coming - $5500-$6000+ regards
