First pic with 50mm 1.4
My new lens arrived today (thanks Birdy) and I couldn't wait to snap a few shots to see how it performs. I'm loving it already.
Here's one I offer up for your discerning critique. I had literally just strapped the lens on and went looking for someone to point it at. I shot it at 1/125, 400ISO and f1.4 I realise now just how narrow that DOF is at 1.4! Wow - One eye in focus, the other way out! Have to keep that in mind next time and close down the aperture a few stops. (Click for larger image)  Simon

I like the shallow DOF and it works well with this shot .............very nice lighting, but the colour seems to be a bit warm..........

I wonder just how much of my portrait shooting I'd do with the aperture at f1.4 with such a shallow DOF. I've messed a few shots by using my 1.8 too open and having shot close enough to have the nose in focus and both eyes out of focus. whoops
Sure looks like you're going to have fun making great use of available light on shoots. I like the depth of colour in the shot from the lamp to the left. Mark Greenmantle

Thanks Bernie. Yes, it's very warm, due to the afternoon sun coming into Ashleigh's room, her violently hot pink bedspread and the yellowy cream coloured paint on the walls! As I said, I basically picked up the camera and fired the shutter. Auto WB and no PP except for the frame. PS - Birdy sent your eye-cup and level in the same package so I've got it here for you on your return. Which is when? If you're flying into Brissy on a weekday between 0700 and 1530 there's a good chance I'll bump into you.

Good points Mark and thanks for your comments. DOF is definitely something I'll be thinking about for portraits at this range. Still, if it means not getting the shot due to low light, I think I can balance the focus issue.
