favicon for the site ?

Postby resnikov on Mon Oct 03, 2005 11:55 am

Just wondering if we should have a favicon for the site ?

wikipedia wrote:A favicon (short for "Favorites icon"), also known as a page icon, is an icon associated with a particular website or webpage. A web designer can create such an icon, and many graphical web browsers—such as recent versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla, Opera, Safari, and Konqueror—can then make use of them. Browsers that support favicons may display them in the browser's URL bar, next to the site's name in lists of bookmarks, and next to the page's title in a tabbed document interface.

Example favicon for wikipedia:

Just an idea, i think its adds quite a bit to site, also helps when selecting the site from your bookmarks.

Eh. We could do it.

Anyone else think it's a good idea?

I didn't know what they were called, but I always liked the look of them - kinda gives a website a better look. If we can make one, then I'm all for it.

All you need is a picture
then use this site to create it http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/

then put it in the web root.

easy

Well, I grabbed the banner graphic and produced this: Image

Not saying it's a work of art: more of a "straw man" to get ideas started.

Actually I notice that you do have a favicon.ico file, but it doesn't meet the favicon specs (e.g. it's not 16x16 pixels) so it's not going to be shown by most browsers. Certainly it's not showing up with Safari.

The sample design I posted earlier WAS 16x16 pixels BTW.

Well you see, that's quite odd because it was made using the engine as previously noted from this website.

However, one other reason it may not be working is I've only added it to the index page at the front. I'll add it to the main php indexes in a few minutes.

And Safari... eh... Mac...
I've tested it with both Opera and Firefox... so far, I'm calling it a problem in both Safari and IE's coding... which I'll just leave alone for fear of backlash from those users who actually like Safari (which as I understand it is pretty similar or even based on a Mozilla engine anyway) and those who don't know there's a world beyond Microsoft's evil browser.

I don't even look at the new Netscape anymore... it's just gotten too bad.

Off Topic:
I haven't even thought about it yet. Lol.
The Maxwell idea only came about 2-3 weeks before April 1st and we only worked on it for about 2-3 days. Nice try, though.

On Topic:
DaveB, I've run the site through the FavIcon validator and while the image may well be at 32x32, the Validator is showing it being able to send out at 16x16 and 32x32.
I'd refresh a few times.

That said, it's only working in two of the three browsers I've tested tonight:

Opera 8.02

I did make a few of these things to see which I'd like most... I went with the "dslr" one... so this - the one immediately below - should be the one you see:

However, I also had these ones prepared:

Bugger.

I guess I'm going to have to go dig up information on Safari then.

From the shots on Apple's site, it looks like Safari is powered by something Mozilla based... then again, everyone has been either buying and modifying the Mozilla engine or mimicking it for some time now, it just may be that.

Regardless, I'll go see what Safari's requirements are for the Mac users here.

The Windows users who still use IE, well, you have no excuse.
