Can't seem to open D70S Raw files in CS2

Can't seem to open D70S Raw files in CS2

Postby campics on Mon Aug 22, 2005 6:05 pm

Don't know if I've done something wrong, but I can not seem to open D70S Raw files in CS2, My personal D70 Raw files are no problem, but can't seem to open a friends D70S Raw files. No problems with either in picture project or Raw Shooter which I feel is a far better program than cs2 raw converter.
Can anyone help??!!??

Try this:

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/ ... rm=Windows

You are looking for "Camera Raw 3.1 Update".

Don't know if I'm looking in the wrong place, but the most recent download for CS seems to be 2.4 which does not seem to work.

Version 2.4 is for Photoshop CS
If you are using CS2 then the latest version is 3.1 and is available here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/ ... ftpID=2931

Photoshop 8 (CS), is the program that my friend is running, that we still can not get to open Nikon D70S Raw files! We have downloaded the 2.4 update and installed it properly! It opens all other Raw files including the D70 Raw, but will not seem to open the D70S Raw!
Comes up with the message "could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document".
We can open the files in "Picture Project" or "Raw Converter Essentials"
but not CS!
With a "Freebie" program doing a wonderful job and Adobe not handling the task at all I have to ask "what the ........"??!!
Regards
Cam

Adam - you have to remove the NEF plugin in your plugins folder as this is NOT ACR that is opening

Get rid of it Adam.

I took out the "Nikon NEF PLugin LE.8bi" file and stuck it in another folder, just in case I ever have to put it back. While ever it's in the Adobe plugins folder it will stuff you around.

Sorry, I should have been more explicit, but Simon is spot on. ACR stands for Adobe Camera Raw

Which brings you back to the fact that to support the D70s you should be using ACR 3.1 or 3.2, which require CS2.

However, have you tried the Adobe DNG Converter 3.1 (a free standalone program which does not require CS2) and tried converting a D70s NEF to a DNG file (which ACR 2.4 should be able to deal with)?
I think the DNG Converter 3.2 uses some new features in DNG v1.1 files which may cause hassles with ACR 2.4, which is why I'm suggesting the 3.1 Converter.

Don’t understand why you have renamed the file :?: If you do as Simon has said so the file is no longer located anywhere in the Photoshop Folder (preferably place it at desk top level) then it will not interact with the Adobe Camera Raw file.

Dave is spot on - I did not see that you had a D70s - DNG is the way to go :D

Yikes, what a drama! I wasn't aware the D70s caused such problems. Sounds like you're heading in the right direction now Adam and I hope it works out.

Just a point for the future. You can disable a PS addin by adding a tilde ie a ~ to the front of the name so renaming it to ~Nikon NEF Plugin LE.8bi would do the trick. Of course this doesn't solve your other problems whereas the hack does (it effectively makes PS think it's a D70 not a D70s)

Not just Adobe. Some software vendors treat service packs as the end of the road. Powerquest (now soaked up by Symantec) was good for this.

As Stubbsy said about the tilde. That is the correct way (says Adobe) to disable a plugin.

This strikes me as a strange statement. When Adobe brings out a new version of Photoshop don't they continue to support the old version (fixing bugs, etc)? But supporting new models of cameras does not fall into the category of "bugs" as far as I can see!
Their continual split into new Photoshop versions every few years IS painful in that if you want to stay with the new features then you need to upgrade, but I guess Adobe does need to fund the development somehow...

I'm glad the DNG Converter has provided a solution for you!
