Great Victorian Bike Ride

In a fit of stupidity, my wife and I signed up for the GVBR (580ks over 9 days). http://www.bv.com.au

I'd like to bring my new D50 + 70-300mm G lens on the ride but I'm a little concerned about damaging it as they are a tad delicate.

Does anyone else go riding with their camera and if so how do you pack it so it's safe and sound?

Hi Chris,
Interesting question indeed. If the ride is primarily on road and not off road where you will be prone to lots of bumps etc I think you should be ok with it in your standard backpack, however how much other 'gear' do you need to take along? I must admit, it would be a crime NOT to take the camera however 9 days is a long bloody time, but think of all the fantastic photos you could take along the way? You might need to get a few more CF cards and an extra battery or two though? What a fantastic idea...you guys must be fit! I would love to do something like this...I think

I wouldnt be worrying too much about the camera as long as you pack it well.

Personally I'd be more worried about making the distance

Hi Chris,

you'll love it. I haven't done the Vic one, but done a few of the NSW rides, they are a great time.

You will be carrying your camera gear all the time, so you will need something that is water proof.

I would think about which lens(es) to bring. On the trips I've been on, a wide-angle lens is usually better, so your kit lens would work best as a lot of shots you want to take are landscapes, etc.

I think there is only about 15Ks of dirt roads which will be graded before the ride.

I'll pack well and make sure it's water proof. Maybe I'll leave the kit lens at home. Don't know if I can talk the missus into letting me part with more money for camera bits. I just bought the D50 and a gig card. There are places on the ride where I can get the battery charged. A number of schools charge a gold coin donation for a charge.

I'm looking forward to the ride.

I'm fitter now than anytime over the last 15 years. However, the bar was not set very high.

If you have a tank bag, pad it well with clothe or foam to reduce vibration, and still can access cameras without getting off the bike otherwise get a backpack, I rode with a tank bag and cameras ( one lens) before , do not have any problem.

I regularly ride about with >$10k worth of gear in my minitrekker. I'm more worried about how much it weighs that if it will get damaged. On these rides you normally hand over all your gear to be trucked to the next campsite and just tack a small backpack. The D50 and whatever lens won't be all that heavy and should be easy to pack safetly.

580km/s in 9 days is 65km/day. Hardly a GIGANTIC day out. There was a ride from Brisbane to Gold Coast last weekend and there were hundreds of people who made the 107kms (they tacked on an extra 30km's to make the ride over 100km's) into a howling headwind. Taking all day to ride 65km's shouldn't be too much trouble.

Yeah, it's hardly the Tour De France. It's really designed for mugs like me to get involved. One of the groups is organising a ride from Perth to Adelaide, from memory they need to average 130ks a day.

On this years GVBR the longest day is 100ks. The first 3 days are dead flat. The only really lumpy bit is from Newstead (near Castlemaine) to Woodend.
