People think that Mac's are bullet proof an that no system maintenence needs to be done. You have got to fix the permissions and do maintanence regularly, and then you will have the most reliable machine out there.

I bought a G5 recently for what I thought was a good deal, and consoled by the fact that I could upgrade processors when needed later. I spent $2200.00 on the thing, knowing that I'd have to pay another $200 on Ram (only came with 256 mb) which is totally pointless (iphoto doesn't even run well off of 256, much less PS).

Anyways, I took the thing home, loved the ILife, though Iphoto kept sticking and pausing when I zoomed in. I also got the new Mighty Mouse which is a great little thingy.

Not two days later Apple announced that they were going to Intel??? I suddenly didn't feel as cozy about my exhorbitant purchase, bought a PC with 2x the harddrive, 4x the ram, for 1/3 the price.
Though it's generic and doesn't seem to be working really well either. I hate computers.

I don't think it's cheap, I think it's damned expensive. I think you really are getting what you pay for, they're well thought out, and I really do think that the Ilife is terrific (had a quick play with Igarage and was impressed at how easy it was to manipulate). Great stuff, and every computer has it's problems. I think had it come with 512 mb of ram, it would have been passable and I'd have dealt with the iphoto probs, as well as the intel turnover in a few years, but I needed to spend a couple hundred right away on ram, they should have stacked it with 512, it wouldn't have killed them.

God, 256mb of ram.....how prehistoric. Computers nowadays shouldn't come with anything less than a gig of ram.

I bought my PC 2 years ago and at the time was pretty much top of the range. Asus P4C800 + P4C 2.8GHZ (think 3.0 and 3.2 were about but scarce and much more expensive almost double the price), 2 x 512mb Ultra Low Latency XMS Corsair Ram, Hercules Prophet 9800PRO (one of the top graphics cards at the time - cost more than the motherboard and the cpu) and two sata 120gb drives. I pretty much had the rest of the stuff eg. keyboard, tower case and monitor, so I just ripped out the old and put in the new. Has been going stabily for the past two years. All those components cost me around $3k but I haven't considered upgrading even now. I think the only thing I might consider upgrading is ram and my monitor (Viewsonic G810) which is on it's way out (lots of moire).

Apple and reliability

Postby stevew on Sun Oct 16, 2005 11:19 pm

Well, as far as I am concerned Macs can't be beaten at any price for reliability. We have six in my house, 3 on wireless. One is a Quadra700 circa 1992 which I have owned since new and which has seen duty as a print/file server for the past 6 years literally running 24/7. The only time it has ever been re-booted is when the mains power to the house has been cut-off.

Now at my work place things are a little different......PCs and problems.

Touche, my iBook 12" is outstanding, colour not the best but it just keeps chugging along, and yes, a 20" iMac G5 would be very nice....

Mac mac mac mac love 'em

I Hate PC's

I just like the operating systems i hate computers and I guess I can use a Mac with my minimal knowledge.

I'm running a G4 with OSX tiger 160 gig HD and 1.25 of ram

It works OK I want a new 20 inch monitor and a 17 inch iBook.

Margo's little 12 inch ibook is wonderful but I need something with a reliable portable DVD burner.

Bix Pix, that's good to hear. I'm guessing that your G5 iMac was one of the original "revision A" models (with the Nvidia graphics chipset).

I think from reading your post before about it you had what looked like the popped capacitor problem.

Sadly a component supplier had a bad batch of capacitors that eventually boil and bust their caps (and things do down hill rapidly :) ). From what I can figure out the internals have been completely revised from the revision B models onwards. Dell was also struck by the same issue in one of their model ranges.
