I just dont have enough length!!!!
Can anyone tell me the price approximately of a 2x TC to fit my Nikkor 80 - 200mm f/2.8 and 70 - 300mm ED lenses?? And what is the quality like??

I don't think you will achieve a lot with the TC 2x on the 70-300ED, but OK with the 80-200, try Kenko TC.

TCs were made to be used with long fast lenses and we users try to mount them on every lens we own. That is generally counterproductive.

Most consumer lenses in 70-something to 300-something f4-or-more class were not intended to have teleconverters attached to them even though they may work.

The upside of the Kenko Pro 300 converters is that they seem to be of relatively good quality and will AF with many lenses at f5.6. My concern for you is that the 2X TC is not nearly as good, quality-wise, as the 1.4X TC and I'd avoid it.

I have a D100 and am sure that in the manual it states that one should not use a teleconverter? Is this right.
I have a 1.4 and 1.6 teleconverters that I used on my film SLRs but have never tried on the D100 because of what I seem to remember having read.
WOW what a mouthfullllllllllllllll.
Any ideas?

I see no reason from an engineering perspective why a camera body's manual would state not to use a TC - only from an arse covering legal perspective (much like the touching/cleaning of sensors). If you try the 1.4 and 1.6 TCs on your D100 and neither catches fire, explodes, or melts to your hand, you can be confident it won't do so on further uses.

I have a D100 as well and used with all my Nikon TCs 1.4, 1.7, 2.0, the camera works, the lenses zoom perfectly, no If no But.
But I never try a 1.6 coz I don't have and can't find one, are you sure it's the TC 1.6?

Hi Guys

Now you have got me thinking. Will have to dig out the equipment. Do have a
1.4 but will have to check the other one. Used it on my F4s with 80 - 200 2.8

I have checked where I saw the DO NOT USE CAUTION.
It is on the pamphlet for the 18 to 70 DX kit lens. It says.......
Incompatible accesories >> Teleconverters (all types)

Could not think why this was, so never used them.

Hi Birddog

Just figured out the 1.6 Telecnverter saga, although have not dug it out yet.
In the D100 manual Pg 176 It says...
TC-16AS Teleconverter is incompatible. Maybe the 16 and 1.6 got mixed up.
Still never tried it on D100.

I am getting a 70-200VR soon and i wish to extend it's reach capabilities with either:

Nikon TCs 1.4, 1.7, 2.0

I know the larger the magnification, quality is compromised

I need a balance between quality results and reach

So I need advice

will adding a teleconverter to the 70-200 f2.8 affect the ability to achieve widest aperture f2.8?

what is the differnece between manual and autofocus teleconverters?

I will only consider buying nikon brand.

NO! You can't have 2.8 anymore if you attach the 1.7 on any 2.8.

The 70-200VR won't work with any manual or non AF TC, only work with AF or AF-S TC.

More: with Nikkor 70-200VR, you require to have the replacement foot as RRS LCF-10 to mount it on the RRS BH55, otherwise no other way you can use it with the ballhead.

TC 1.7 end of story. Unlike the TC 2 you only lose 1 stop and it's more magnification than the 1.4. I rarely take mine off my 70-200 VR and I think the same applies to the many other happy owners here.

Wendell, 1.7 is a good balance (obviously, its in the middle ). 1.4 has almost no quality loss, 1.7 a little, 2 is a little soft. Many on this board went 1.7 including me.

Stubbsy, we both love our 1.7TC Just for sake of accuracy it is 1.5 stops on the 1.7 TC. 1 on the 1.4 and 2 on the 2

Naturally. You lose one stop with the 1.4x, 1.5 stops with the 1.7x and 2 stops with the 2.0x; widest aperture with the 1.7x is therefore f/4.8. It's still pretty sharp at f/4.8 with the TC (although obviously not as great as without it).

Wendell, also the 1.7 works very well on the 300/4 AFS, a very nice combo and cheap way to get a 510mm 6.8
