For Sale Section???

Postby Muzza22au on Mon Oct 17, 2005 10:56 pm

Apparently you need special access to post in the for sale section? How do you get about getting such access? As there was a lense I am interested in?

Thanks

I think Gary forgot to add "yet" to the end of his sentence... Keep posting & contribute to the forum and it will happen sooner than you think...

John,

No, I didn't forget.

But my expectation from this person is that he would need to continue his postings at a similar rate for, perhaps, two or three weeks to be considered.

And some of his posts are, quite frankly, inconsequential. Stuff like "me too" simply doesn't cut it. Many of his posts are little more than that, and I simply don't believe that this is a legitimate joining of our community.

Gee's what do I need to do? I am very new to Digital SLRs so I have been reading through the forum, and like many I would like to further my knowledge and gear, I am going to be unable to continue this kind of posting anyway as I head back to work tomorrow night for 2 weeks, so if I have made too many short blunt statements I'm sorry, feel free to delete them I dont really care as i'm not in here to get my post count up but to enjoy the site and the people here. As for getting special access then I dont really care if I get it or not as I can always buy my gear right here in Perth or from over sea's. But I thought that if a "Memeber" has something for sale and someone was interested in purchasing it then why wouldn't they be able "Member or Not" as it helps everybody out.

Oh well I've said what I've had to say... And I am looking forward to learning more from all the knowledgeable guys/gals on here...

Thanks Owen,

Was just referring to Gary's comments regarding myself! And not the community. and as far as I'm concerned if he has a problem with what or how little a comment I post then PM me and let me know, not rant on in a section where I ask a simple question about why there are restrictions. Maybe he should be more thoughtful to "Us Newbies" and let us know if we are doing something wrong...

My 2cents...

Cheers

Youve got to take it from our point of view. A few people join solely to buy things and when they see the requirements, they panic and try to make the post count as quickly as possible.
Now, I am not suggesting this is you, but 41 posts in one day isnt even done by the high count posters and, by and large, it does seem a little suspect.

As I already posted I dont really care about the Access issue! And I only just found and read the section regarding what is required to access the members sections!!! Which I personally would have liked to be given a "Here read this for rules and Regulations", instead of the reply I got!

And with my "High" post count for yesterday, well I am at home doing nothing, and I just joined the forum! It could have been alot higher if I wanted to go through the old posts and comment on them! But I didn't instead I just looked at them and admired them.

Tomorrow night I fly out to a mine site where we have no internet access for 2 weeks, so in 2 weeks time I will be logging on here again and going through the posts that I missed! Am I not allowed to dig them up and post just because my post count will be "TOO HIGH". As I said before I dont care what my post count is like, and really I dont care if I get "Special Access". Think me suspect or what I am here to learn and not to RANT on about an issue that could have easily been avoided...

Cheers

Scott

The problem is that a genuine newcomer who happens to post heaps can't be differentiated from a scammer looking for a bargain and posting heaps since all that gets seen is the posts. Unfortunately some innocents get caught in the net in order to protect the majority. When you come back in a couple of weeks and post more then you'll start to look less like a scammer and more like a genuine newcomer. Your cause wasn't helped by the brevity and repetitive nature of some of your reponses and I'm guessing that's what Gary picked up on. It's unfortunate, but the rules are there to benefit the community as a whole. Keep contributing meaningful posts and you'll be a welcome addition to the group.

Wouldn't it be better to have automatic membership to those sections after a certain amount of time x posts x piccies? PS Who does one request this from?

I have found I do not have access to a few sites from time to time and I simply go to another to which I do have access. Does one make a general request?

I am sure there is probably a site that explains all this but I think I missed that too. We non computer gurus struggle sometimes.

Peter
It's unlikely to be automatic in the forseeable future since post quality is a factor that needs subjective assessement. SO far as the process I know Gary is bringing out some updated details that addresses this soon. And the answer to your question is you currently PM Leigh or Gary with a request for full access.

Thanks and I will.

Peter Mc

Just another quickie and related. I looked at a post in the general section on the main page about 'laptops' and when I went to reply it said it was a members only site. I was trying to find out what members site it was and I wasnt able to. How do you know which site such a post comes from? Speaking from an ignoramus point of view...one who finds it difficult to follow signs.

Part 2: How many and what are the names of members' sites? Or point me to where I can find this out.

Kind regs & much appreciated so I can move in those circles.

I'm actually going to change that later on.

I don't believe computers should be a members only section.

Then again, we're going to be doing some site revisions in the way it's structured over the next few weeks.

As I already posted I dont really care about the Access issue! And I only just found and read the section regarding what is required to access the members sections!!! Which I personally would have liked to be given a "Here read this for rules and Regulations", instead of the reply I got!

With all due respect, those rules are posted in the general information pages, and in the FAQ. They are posted there so that you can review them PRIOR to signing up here.

If you choose to not read them prior to joining us here, is that my problem? I'm sorry, but I don't think so.

As has already been mentioned, those rules exist for a purpose, and that prpose has been explained to you.

Perhaps what hasn't yet been made entirely clear to you is that this is not a public forum, but a private one, and you are perfectly free to accept those rules, and my application of them, and stay, or not, and go.

That choice is your's, and your's alone.

And with my "High" post count for yesterday, well I am at home doing nothing, and I just joined the forum! It could have been alot higher if I wanted to go through the old posts and comment on them! But I didn't instead I just looked at them and admired them.

And that is fair enough.

That said, we need to still enforce our rules, and if that doesn't suit your needs, so be it. Hpwever, from our perspective, if you're not interested in member access, then why do you ask about it?

Putting this very simply, we apply certain subjective criteria to all new members (not just you) but your postings and content raised just about alarm bell that we have.

Stick around and prove that you're going to be a useful member of the community and you will, in time, qualify for full member access.

But I'm not prepared to grant you - or any other total stranger - that privilege based upon one day's history. It won't happen. Not today, and not in the future.

Again, you're free to accept my decision and stick around, or not, and leave.

Tomorrow night I fly out to a mine site where we have no internet access for 2 weeks, so in 2 weeks time I will be logging on here again and going through the posts that I missed! Am I not allowed to dig them up and post just because my post count will be "TOO HIGH". As I said before I dont care what my post count is like,

I do, and several other members do as well.

Yes. By you.

You should have read the rules BEFORE you joined us.

Please don't go blaming others for your failures; we don't do that here.

Absolutely not, Peter.

We need to maintain manual control to ensure that scammers don't get through.

PS Who does one request this from?

Leigh or myself. It's very clearly laid out in the FAQ and the Rules of the \Forum post.

I have found I do not have access to a few sites from time to time and I simply go to another to which I do have access. Does one make a general request?

Yep. Once you comply with the requirements (and you do) you simplyu send us a PM and we add you to the Members group.

I am sure there is probably a site that explains all this but I think I missed that too. We non computer gurus struggle sometimes.

Front page, look for the FAQ. It couldn't be easier.

Try the front page.

Centre column.

Below the news section there's a whole lot of sections, divided into groupings. One of thos groupings is named Members Only.

Hopefully that helps.

I except that yes maybe I should have read the FAQ's prior to signing up!

The main reason I signed up was because I know a few guys on here and thought that it would be a great way to meet more like minded people, I raised the comment about the Members "For Sale" section because I couldn't post a reply and thought it strange, nothing more, Yes if I had of read the FAQS then that would have solved the mystery!

As with my original question
Apparently you need special access to post in the for sale section? How do you get about getting such access? As there was a lense I am interested in?

Thanks

I thought this was a respectable question, but yes as you said
You should have read the rules BEFORE you joined us.
, Which I totally agree with, then all of this would have been avoided, but alas I didn't and I'm sure there are others that haven't aswell...

But ohwell things happen and we are all susceptible to slip ups! But if you read carefully I wasn't blaming anyone but replying to the comments you made which I suppose under the circumstances is fair enough, but those that know me, know that I am not a scammer and cannot stand scammers... So with you putting me into there category was degrading and I dont appreciate that from anybody!

I have looked at that about a million times and it has just registered following your comments. I think I have always interpreted Members Only as general members of the forum.

Now it all makes sense. An ah ha moment has been had.

With respect, those who know you will, of course, be more privileged in that matter than any of us on the moderator team. Given that we do not know you, and that we're only able to make judgements based upon what we see, we have no choice but to protect our resources. If that upsets or pisses you off, so be it.

I make no apologies for protecting our resources, but I do hope that you do stick around and become a member of the community.
