Places of interest on WA coast

Postby DionM on Thu Oct 20, 2005 11:08 pm

Hopefully (if I and the wife get time off work) I am planning to fly to Perth sometime soon and travel down to Margaret River and up to Exmouth. Am planning it as a bit of a photog holiday as well, so any suggestions on places of interest?

I will of course be trying as oft as possible for a good sunset over the ocean, since they are impossible over here on the east coast.

I know the Pinnacles will be on my list, and probably some coastline somewhere, but I really don't know?

Is it too late for flowers by then (ie, should I bother with the macro lens)?

Canon 20D and a bunch of lovely L glass and a 580EX. Benro tripod. Manfrotto monopod. Lowepro and Crumpler bags. And a pair of Sigma teleconverters, and some Kenko tubes.

I haven't live in Perth for more than 10 years so the memory is going a bit foggy.

I'd try Kalbarri on the way up to Exmouth. A trip up the gorge is really worth while.

The big timber country of Pemberton.

The whole coastline is pretty spectacular. Plenty of beaches.

Great, thanks! Abbey Beach, Redgate Beach ... where are they?

Current plan is to go to Perth-Pinnacles-Kalbarri (Natl Park)-Monkey Mia-Exmouth.

Then on return to Perth (drive straight through) go down around Margaret River area.

Hmmm, Margaret River to Exmouth is quite a lot of coastline. Are you coming for a month? I know it's been said before but WA is a big place.

As for the wildflowers, due to good winter rain, this is one of the best wildflower years in many years. Tell me when you are thinking of coming and I'll tell you what you could find and where. ATM the Orchids are in flower all around Perth metro area.

Take care

Owen - thanks for the link.

Bob - Yeah its a fair drive. We plan to be travelling most days. Exmouth is where my wifes father works/lives, so we will spend a little time there but want to see elsewhere. Margaret River is presently an optional extra.

I am a keen long distance driver so we would mosey up there, but then race back Exmouth to Perth in about 1.5 days (900 kms one day, 500 the next). Big days, I know. But the cost of airfares from Perth to Exmouth floored me (as does most regional air travel).

At this stage - pending on other things - we are looking at the last 2 weeks of Nov. I know this is cutting it fine for the end of the wildflower season. It's not a big drama - we are going there for other reasons, but the wildflowers would be a bonus - if they're not out, all it means is I don't pack my macro I suppose.

Canon 20D and a bunch of lovely L glass and a 580EX. Benro tripod. Manfrotto monopod. Lowepro and Crumpler bags. And a pair of Sigma teleconverters, and some Kenko tubes.
