What should you do with your photographics gears....

After few wet and humidity days?

Me:
- Recycle the silica gels in the microwave oven or under direct sunlight,
- Bring my bags and gears: bodies, lenses, display under the direct sunlight an hour or so, take the lens caps off, it's the cleaning time to clean the filters, blow the dust off, clean film residues on glasses.
- Dry the bag under the sun 1/2 day.

Have a cold beer in your hand and a big smile on your face. It's the proper way to frequently inspecting and doing maintainenance of your gears while they're in your possession, they're your investment and you have to look after them well, you'll get the reward at the end.

I put all my gear in a pelican case with a large desiccant cube for the duration of the rain. Took stuff out to use it a few times though

hehehehe the secret is to do it while the wife is not around. It's not so much that you have too much grear it's the question she asks "when did you buy that"? Standard reply "a few years ago". Then quickly pack it away before the next question is asked and get another beer.

Not many posts for someone who's been a member for so long...... but good advice none the less !

On a similar note, I recently bought some 'colour change' silica gel, sealed all my gear in a new 'tupperwear' container (well, it's actually about 50 litres - but you get the idea) and I'm astonished to find that the silica gel has changed colour already ! The high humidity lately must be treated with respect !

I forgot what fun it could be drying the silica out when the wet sets in. It has been 40 degrees everyday this week... it has also rained every day.
Silica has had a few trips through the microwave and I am still driving moisture from it.

I have a dehumidifier in the computer room and get about 4L/day to keep about 55% humidity in the air.

My wife had a great strategy with new clothes until her sister let the cat out of the bag.

Whenever she bought new clothes, she'd have them put on a hangar rather than in a shopping bag. Then, she'd put the hanger inside a plastic bag from the dry-cleaners (specially kept for that purpose) and nonchalantly bring them into the house and hang them in the wardrobe. I never knew!

Of course, every time I see something new I ask about it, and get the standard reply "This old thing? I've had it forever."

You gotta love 'em.
