I do, I think the prizes on offer are all awesome, and considering it's free to be a member. I think the generousity of members on this forum is second to none, infact I felt compelled to donate a prize myself, but haven't found anything appropriate as yet...
As Craig said we don't charge a membership fee which makes this all the more special.
I think you would be hard pushed to see a corporate comp equal or better the prizes that are on offer. A D70 body, free arial flight etc etc does it get any better... I for one am more than pleased with the very kind donations, I only wish there was something I could offer. Nikon F80D, FM2n

Gary's question is:
Are the prizes enough? or want to see more? Paul, I & Poon same as other members, who support the prizes for the challenges are always valued the high standard of this board same as for each member, who actively participate, we finally are in a closed, tied family, knew and support each others in many ways. I & Poon are happy and alway talking same as finding about: how to bring more benefits to members which Poon now has so many friendly faces everytime he visits Australia. Birddog114

More prizes... hmmm... I am greedy so I'm put up my hand.
BUT what we have already is more than enough. Perhaps we should make the extra prizes donations to the... nah I can't say it - greed took over. HB
This may seem harsh to some but it is posted with all good intent as constructive criticism.
I believe that there are already more than enough prizes. I am yet to vote in a competition because I am yet to see anything that merits commendation. Particulary in the set-subject challenges, or whatever you call them, I invariably find the relevance of the submissions to the brief quite wanting. So given this observation does the acquisition of a valuable prize in relation to a work really serve to drive home the right message? Or does it promote false notions of capability? The world of commercial photography is a hard task master. Deliver or perish. Sometimes similar discipline in the recreational arena might also foster improvement. Oh, and I'll accept the prize for the most unpopular post of the day. (Or is that the most frank and forthright?) Cheers _______________

Sheetshooter or is that Straightshooter??
I dont totaly agree with you, but I will say that I am yet to enter any of the challanges. The reason, I dont think any pics I took were of any standard. Other than poor. But i have enjoyed some of the winning pics from previous challanges very much. As for the prizes, how about a return airfare from Bilo to Sydney for anyone from Bilo that enters . Seriously, the prizes ROCK, its a credit to all involved. MATT
With respect Sheetshooter, I think you're missing the point.
The prizes and competitons are there to hopefully improve people's photographic skills. We're not suggesting that immediately they're qualified to work in the commercial or art-based world of photography. You not voting and not findming much in the images is your call. I happen to disagree and I think that barring any basics a lot of the members may or may not have gone through, I've seen a lot more talent in some of those images than I have through some of the people I see at Uni these days and through a lot of the weaker efforts of commercial photography I see posted in magazines as of late. I can see lot of values and quality works from all the pics from the last 6 challenges, and some are better than a bunch of photos which have been taken by the Pro and have them on the mags.
I didn't see any fallback with all members who contributed their photos and their entries same as the themes, perhaps we're (on this board) unclear where we are upto, but those challenges are the most fun and supportive, creatively, which I have never found on any of other forum, that make me proud of this one. Look, this playground is not only or restricted to the Pro or Pro Commercial photographers, it makes more easy for all other to participate and enjoying their learning Birddog114

Hi Gary
I'll put my hand up. I think there are more than enough prizes. However, if you were looking to add another...perhaps the winning photo could be displayed as part of the D70Users website banner for 2006 ? I guess sort of a Photo Of The Year (POTY) This would be a constant source of inspiration for all of us, and I'm sure the winner would love to see their photo "up in lights", so to speak... Just an idea... Dave

People.
First of all, the quality of images posted is, and always will be, a subject assessment, and there is nobody here who can say with any degree of authority that post A is better than post B. It's all just down to personal opinion and preferences, and nothing more. HOWEVER: This thread is NOT about the quality of entries in the challenges, nor about the quality of any images posted here, so please do not persist with posts along those lines. g.

I will just say that I view the challenges as a vehicle to get us all to improve, not actually to reach a certain standard. If the quality of individual contributors generally improve, I personally feel the challenges have been more than worthwhile.
I am not qualified to say if the images have reached a certain standard, but I can see a substantial improvement in many of the participants individual entries. Therefore I view the challenges as a success. Aside from the above, like Birddy, I have seen many images which are better in my opinion than published images, which probably says: that crap is often published, that I didn't know the original brief or some images are good. Up to the beholder to choose which is right.
Aussie Dave,
How and what make you come up with that ideas? PoTY? Birddog114
VNAF, My Beloved Country and Airspace
From memory, I think I mentioned a similar idea a while ago (unless I meant to and never posted it ). I remember when I was fortunate enough to take out a POTW earlier this year, it was such a great feeling and everyone's praise made all my efforts to better my skills seem that more tangable. I would think that winning POTY would be the same, possibly better... To me, that's a prize that you can't buy yourself & although a new D70s body would be a fantastic prize to win, having your POTY photo displayed for ALL to see would be "very" cool indeed.... Dave

Leigh not sure if we're on the same wavelength here.... my suggestion was for the winning Challenge 7 entry to become POTY...not for the mods to pour thru all images posted in 2005. Perhaps limiting POTY to just Challenge 7 might be deemed as "too limiting" for some people. It was only a suggestion and it is available for Gary, yourself or anyone to run with it, if they see fit, and change the idea to whatever will suit the forum the best. Dave

Hmm, the plot thickens Gary. Matt
True, but on the other hand, the first 4 or so challenge winners didn't get the chance to win a D70s body either... Dave

I think: it's unfair for the last challenges, PoTY can be selected from other sources or areas, as PoTW etc... Photos were with the last 6 challenges will have another use, thought 6 wiiners already got their prizes and honour. Birddog114
VNAF, My Beloved Country and Airspace
Yes, but they did have a prize! as the forum grown, the next challenge winner may win a D2x or a D200 or a BMW X5 who knows? Birddog114
VNAF, My Beloved Country and Airspace
An X5?
Christ, you could sell it and buy a D2x, a D200, a Horseman Nikon mount digi, an RD-1 and still have money to spend!!! Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

Just being a smartarse here Dave, so the person who wins 7 should get a D70 and POTY? Wouldn't it be fairer to give POTY to Challenge Eight who wont get a D70? Not really worrying mate, just pointing out that is hardly fair. Any other ideas from anyone to make it fair? I dont think someone should get a D70 and POTY.
Yeah! you're right! The first challenge winner just got a 1Gb CF card Astone. The second challenge winner got the Epson R800 the third challenge winner got an SB800 The 4th challenge winner got the Nikkor 50/1.4 The 5th challenge winner got the D70s The 6th challenge winner got 2Gb card CF Transend As you seen, prizes are varied, so the X5 is not a surprised at all Birddog114

Glen, Surely, if there's a chance then it'll happens! nothing is impossible!!!!!!!!! We never think of the D70s as a first prize not long before didn't we? Birddog114
VNAF, My Beloved Country and Airspace
This is the first post of yours that I can't really agree with at all! If this was a professionals only site you would have merit. To me it is a bit like when a parent says their child does the best paintings even though to the rest of the world they would be pathetic. If someone has a false notion of their capability, at least they will be happy for a little while until the real world tells them they are hopeless again. This is a fun, sheltered, private den of people who may or may not be pro, but enjoy experimenting with different aspects of photography. I would give a four-year-old child first prize in the 60m sprint even though I know I could run faster than him! HB
perhaps the mods can decide the POTY winner from Challenge 7 (which may or may not be the same person that takes out 1st Prize...
As I mentioned, if this seems too limiting, I'm all up for the boundaries of the idea to be changed. Dave

Bad luck for them! if they could not fit or use the 4WD as other did! Any car will become a lethal weapons if you're careless, not only the 4WD, even the push bike! Birddog114
VNAF, My Beloved Country and Airspace
If there is to be a POTY then I think challenge 7 would be far too limiting. There have been some absolutely magnificent photographs posted on this forum, and to exclude them from the running would be criminal IMO. I would say don't restrict it to the challenges full stop. Open it up to the board as a whole. Although saying that, 4500 posts is something of a monstrous task!!
Matt
I'm not sure Dave.
I mean, it seems kind of short-sighted to say that a Picture of the Year nomination can only come from one part of the year, specifically from a challenge. And what would the prize be? Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au
Contributor for fine magazines such as PC Authority and Popular Science.
Yes, for one challenge, we could not say it the PoTY, maybe it's not better than other pics in the past challenges. And the prize: the D70s body for the winner as stated & PoTY as well. No, sorry, I don't think it can be done. Birddog114
VNAF, My Beloved Country and Airspace
I don't think Pic of the year needs a prize. The glory of having you pic chosen amongst so many arguable awesome photo's should be prize enough.
Either way the POTY should be seperate to the challenges IMHO, the challenges already have their format, and their prizes.
my Mum always told me to keep my mouth shut
POTW has never been about the "best photo of the week". Why should POTY be any different ? I will admit, looking back on this thread, limiting POTY to one challenge is probably not the best idea.....but as I keep re-iterating, the idea can be changed to whatever works best. If not, at least we have the other prizes to fall back on Dave
