photoshop cs: no exif data??i cant believe i have never noticed before but, after post processing images, photoshop cs doesnt save exif data, is this correct?
i have checked through most photos (jpegs) pp through pscs and none have the exif date, ie camera type etc. am i doing something wrong? has this discussion came up before? thanks [every man's work is always a portrait of himself.

Hi Genji.
This has come up before. The EXIF data will be trashed if you use "Save for Web" but not is you use "Save as". If you are already using "Save as" and still losing the EXIF then some other gremlin is at large and perhaps someone else could throw some light on it... Simon

I'm using "save as" and all exif data is striped but IPTC is still intact....strange. anyone got any ideas? [every man's work is always a portrait of himself.

How are the photos getting into Photoshop? Are they coming from JPEGs or from RAWs? If RAW, what version of ACR are you using?
When you say that the EXIF data is missing, how are you determining this? If you open the files in Photoshop again, does File Info actually show you the data even though other tools can't find it? I seem to remember something about a bug some time ago in CS where the metadata was saved in XMP format but no longer saved in EXIF format. It was a while ago (ie when CS first came out): I can't remember which component was updated to fix it, but a search on the Adobe site should show something up.
i open the NEF in PSCS after process in NC 4.3.1 under File Info> Camera Data 1 & 2, the fields are empty! ACR is 2.3.... ...just updated to 2.4 still not reading the exif strange under File Browser, Metadata> Camera Data (Exif) everything is there, but when i open the file, exif data is missing??? What do you mean by this? What processing do you do in Nikon Capture that will be picked up by CS? Are you not opening the NEF files in CS with ACR but rather via an intermediate TIFF file (or via some Nikon NEF plugin which is overriding ACR)? Which file are we talking about? NEF or Photoshop-generated JPEG? If it's the NEF then there's a problem in the NEF-handling plugin. If it's the JPEG then I'm really confused...

I've tested this using NC 4.3.2 and PS CS2 From NC I right clicked the image and chose Open With Photoshop (16 bit)? If so, the way this gets from NC to PS CS is by NC saving the image as a TIFF then causing PS to open the TIFF (in the recent files list you'll see the file is called PSXFER.tif immediately after it's opened). For me, when I do that the EXIF is there in Camera data 1 and also shows in the EXIF part if I click advanced to see all image tags. I then tried saving the image as a TIFF from NC, then opening the resultant image from disk using PS CS. Same story - EXIF is there. I also tried saving the resultant image from PSCS as a jpeg and as a new TIFF. In each case the EXIF stayed there. You refer to post processing. Does this happen when you do no PP in PSCS, but just save a new image. I'm wondering if you're PP includes some action that actually creates a duplicate of the image, discarding the original and it's this duplicate you're saving (eg the border action I use does this). ok, i have confused both of you on my workflow: 1. use nikon view to tag files i want to pp 2. open NEF file in NC, process wb, sharpness etc. save and close NEF file. 3. open NEF file in PSCS, File>File Info>Camera Data 1 & 2: no camera info! OK found the problem. I save the NEF as TIFF and open in PSCS, the exif is there. But still a problem with opening NEF files in PSCS somethings wrong with the PSCS NEF plugin?? Just out of curiousity, are you sure you're using the ACR plugin? Or is it possible that you're actually using an older plugin or the Nikon plugin? Check in these directories:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\File Formats and C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats If you see anything in there named "Nikon NEF Plugin.8BI" (or similar) I would recommend renaming those off to something else (I renamed it to "Nikon NEF Plugin.bak")... If I remember correctly, the actual Adobe plugin is named "Camera Raw.8BI". The Nikon one will override the Adobe if it's present. Anthony

Genji What happens if you open the NEF in PSCS without taking it into NC first? Peter

Just a tip. THe "official" way to disable an Adobe plugin is to add a ~ to the start of the name. So it would be ~Nikon NEF Plugin.8BI and PS will ignore it. Peter

Problem solved!!
thanks dave, peter & anthony feel embrassed . I'm not sure how the nikon nef plugin overide the ACR plugin. since i do all my raw process in NC i never noticed ACR was missing!! [every man's work is always a portrait of himself.

The important thing is you solved the problem. Having shared your embarrassment here, you'll hopefully save someone else from the same fate (provided they do a search before they ask this question when it happens to them ) Peter
