Not sure if General Discussion is the correct venue for this but I have experienced less than overwhelming joy in usine the SEARCH function on the home page. As an example of what I mean, just this morning I typed in Apple Aperture in an attempt to make additional comment in Heath's thread from last week. A pretty specific query I would have thought. But the post I sought was buried down on page two of the response amid a truckload of posts with no reference to either Apple or Aperture.

Am I doing something wrong? Should I use inverted commas on my search criteria as with a boolean search? Some hand-holding and TLC would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Walter, just one of the vagaries of the search function. Your search will have returned anything with 'apple' OR 'aperture'. Searching "apple AND aperture" (without the inverted commas) will return the desired result. :)

Walter

If you want a result set containing BOTH words you'd put Apple and aperture

Putting Apple Aperture means threads containing apple OR aperture.

the quote below is from the main search dialog you get to if you choose search options, or click search at the top of a threda

You can use AND to define words which must be in the results, OR to define words which may be in the result and NOT to define words which should not be in the result. Use * as a wildcard for partial matche

Edit: Damn you Trent - you're faster on the draw

Try "apple and aperture" (no quotes) or your original search with the "Search for all terms" option selected (just below the search box). The post you referred to then comes up second, after this one. :)

Every word in each post hgets indexed, so if the word "Apple" appears in a post, and if the word "apeture" appears in a post, then all of those posts will be, if I understand it correctly, be displayed, in descending date order.

Sometimes I suspect it's better to try just one word, but it's absolutely hopeless if you're trying to find something by trying to search for its URL.

and, significantly, the number of results returned is substantially reduced.

So why didn't you ask? We're all family here. Additionally if something is a problem for you there's a chance it is or has been for someone else. Look how quickly it was resolved. BTW If you ever do this again I'll severely chastise you

Not a twit. As I said you're family. No problems with me. I'm just trying to encourage you to be less cautious in the future.

What's interesting is that now when you search Apple and Aperture, this thread will also pop up ;)
