Personally I'm happy with 6mp, could of gone possibly 8mp and still been happy. What I really want is pro AF (both subject lock and drive of big lens) and a pro Viewfinder. Moving subjects are a bitch with the D70.

Only 1/250 flash sync. Can't understand why a CCD suddenly can't do 1/500

1) 95% coverage @ 0.94x is on par with the D2X's 100% @ 0.86x (slightly bigger image but slightly less frame coverage), and naturally superior to the D70s (95% @ 0.75x).

2) 1/250 ISO100 (D200) is the same exposure value as 1/500 ISO200 (D70)...

Looks like it will meter with non-CPU AI lenses too, it just gets better and better. 8)

Judging from John's post, it looks like Wednesday morning 6 am AEDST is when the NDA expires.

Considering that it is:

4.20pm Monday in LA
7.20pm Monday in NY
12.20am Tuesday London

I would assume we are looking at another 12 hours minimum based on London time

That was only going on a post at dpreview that stated there was a Nikon presentation at that time in The Netherlands... I've also read that it may be released at 3pm Tokyo time today, which is 5pm Sydney time.

3:00pm in Tokyo should be 6:00PM in Sydney, we just had our DS on Sunday.

Oui. ;) Anything in particular you'd like translated? I'm sure Gerard can help too. :)

Edit: from the last paragraph it looks like it'll be released just before Christmas (Nov 21 is nearly a month before the first specimens of the D200 will appear).

Birddog - I think the 3pm Tokyo = 5pm Sydney comparison is actually correct - without DS, it would be 3pm Tokyo = 4pm Sydney.....

I like the fact that you will be able to zoom in 400% on images on the LCD... should be good for checking sharpness!!

So far it's looking great.

AF performance and image quality (duh!) will be the deciding factors for me.

I got my D70 from Vanbar for a greatly reduced price compared to the other retailers (The kit lens was basically free)...

... They could do well from a price like that!!

John,

It's estimated price only,

Nikon D200 Basic (Approx Price only)

Yes, you'll have to think or looking around or over AU$3k. in the shop.
Price for it, is not confirmed from Maxwell as yet, but first lot of stock in Australia will be end of Jan 06.

It'll be interesting to see how their prices hold once stock is available.

Of course, the ever on-the-ball Maxwell's wbsite is still totally clueless.

I think it may have been last updated in around 1870, such is the way Maxwell keep their website up-to-date and their pricing regime realistic.

Of course, I'm somewhat disappointed in the specs for this camera, and it has very few features that I find compelling. 10.2 MP ?? Blah!

Why make yet another sensor? it only increases the costs to the consumer!

WT3 wireless transmitter? Again, why not the WT2? Again, this seems to me to be poor use of existing resources.

At least it has an x-synch socket, and the multiple exposure facility is nice.

But I don't really see this as a compelling upgrade path; I'll wait for February, when they'll announce the D90 as the D70's replacement, using the same sensor technology, at about $200 more than a D50.

And then we can wait until 2007 for Maxwell's to update their website with it!

:(

John,
I do not want to tell you this coz I did have the price of it from this morning at the launch in conjunction with Melbourne Cup Lunch.
It's more higher than what Vanbar advertised, I may buy from them and resell to my customer if they do sell at that price, that's under cost ex-GST. BTW, 20 preordered unit which I already have in my book as of this hour.

Sit back, relax! and consider yourself.

Who's going to buy the D200 with the 18-70 kit lens? it's also a joke!!!!!!

And with 17-55DX, RRP

2,300.00 GBP = 4,061.57 USD = AU$5414.00

Maxwell's RRP of the D200 body only is still around the level which I posted early on this thread, it's not too far with RRP in the US$2300.00

If the viewfinder's up to snuff, this would be a good reason for those with older film cameras (who have not yet made the switch) to move to digital.

I'm still not seeing any reasons for a typical D70 user to jump ship.

I would like to see some pricing info on and sample images from the 18-200 though.

Yup, will be doing just that. Looks like we've got until at least February or March until these are in decent supply, possibly more. Really depends on price too, if we're talking A$3900 that's way exxy, the French article linked a few pages ago mentions sub-2000 Euro (i.e. low-$3Ks).

I think this camera is indeed a good upgrade option from the D70 (if you're so inclined) and can't afford the D2X, it's certainly one I can't wait to play with. There are no huge 'blow your mind' features over the D70 (maybe metering with AI lenses), but let's face it, it's similar with the D2X really, and the D200 aint going to be better than the flagship. Instead, it's many incremental increases, which together make the difference. Sure, the D70 is better bang for buck, but I'm an enthusiast who wants to take photos with the thing, not a bean-counter. If I wanted bang for buck I'd have stuck with the D70 and 18-70. :)

For D70 Users:
Hang on to your beloved D70 and wait for the next release, not too far away!

For Fuji S2/ D100/ P&S owner or who's never own a DSLR, the D200 is maybe for your consideration. It's Pro-built with "crappy" CAM 1000 and 10.2, and it's only 20% of features more than what your D70 can do for you but double the price of the D70 (body only).

For D2 series, just forget it! it'll suffer you for the rest of your life.

It's RRP and it'll be around AU$3K at the time it's available in Australia.
First lot is available at the end of December, but don't hold your breath! It's only available for commercial only and very limited.

Next lot will be end of January or mid of Feb due to New Year and other holidays. The most and good timing for stock fullfilled is after Chinese NY or around March/ April next year. By June 06 or after, it'll be "cash & carry" and it's time for your Tax Refunds cheque to be banked into Nikon's coffin.

I have to submit the forecast of it for ordering soon

The D2x is only 3 letters and the D200 is four letter and it's the highest number in Nikon DSLR body.
