Cameras at the Gabba

Well,it's the first day of the 2005/6 cricket test series, and what's a good little cricketfan going to do but take himself and camera gear to the Gabba to watch Australia v West Indies.

On fronting up at the gate for the now compulsory search, the security guard looks inside my LowePro and says "Ooh, I don't know about this. It looks professional." I have a D70 plus 3 lenses.

Calls his mate over "What do you reckon about this?" Mate says "Nah, that's professional."

Me: "I checked your Conditions of Entry on the web before coming. There's nothing to prohibit cameras of any sort." True.

They (both male) call over a female: "What do you reckon about this stuff". She looks inside & points to the 70-200 VR and says "That's professional." She can't read the label, mind you, she's just going by the size. She walks away.

The first bloke says "OK, but you can't use that big one" and just lets me go through!!! No suggestion of confiscating it (believe me, that would not have happened ) or refusal of entry.

Did I go in - of course!

The whole episode was rather peculiar, in fact downright funny!

The whole "nah that's too professional, you can't use it" is just utter crap. Heheh I'm not going to say anything else about this as it gets me too worked up and I've already had to deal with the bloody bank today.

All right. I will hit from other side.

Recently I went to jazz concert, quite a big event, world #1 trumpet concerting in Sydney. So I contacted manager asking if I can take few photos for myself. After short disscusion he agreed with condiction that he would like to see my shots. After, I sent him an email with few of them and now it seems that I might shoot for him next event.

Well, sometimes is better to not make shortcuts

I agree that it's frustrating, there never seems to be any issues with the little silver cigarette packet point & shoot thingy's and they can have more reach, I just assume it's a way of protecting the pro's interests and an attempt to get more sales for them?

Sounds like you handled it well though - I would have blown up and been ejected before i even got into the ground.

I was at Blues Point last week with a few students. We had a lot of gear out mounted on tripods when a patrol car pulls up and the cop in the passenger seat beckons me over. "What's happening Mate?" he says. "Nothing", I answer. "Is someone famous coming?" he adds.
"No".
"So what's all the camera gear for?"
"Camera club. We are getting a bit of long range photography practice".
"Yer...I don't know mate", says the cop, "THEY don't like you taking photographs here".

I look at him, saying nothing, waiting for him to make himself look even more stupid in my eyes. The cops drive off.

I wonder...does he realise how absurd his comment was? There are millions of photographs taken of the Harbour Bridge every year. Is there something new that has been added? Something...very secret perhaps?

Man that sort of attitude sh!ts me... I got told in Boston I couldn't take photos (in the street) because the buildings were private property, So I asked What I could take photo of .... strangely they couldn't tell me... just told me to move along.

Well I found out that I need more grunt. The 70-200 VR didn't cut it from the boondocks where I was sitting.

It's OK on Firefox though.
