I tried RAW mode

Hi All, Well got home from work done the lawns, and was time to try RAW out. I am amazed on how much control 1 has over the image as compared to jpeg. So how many can 1 get RAW files onto a 1 gig card???
This will be ineterest comming from someone who takes like 200+ shots at a race meeting, Snap happy i am or do i have to really start choosing my shots. I shoot in continuess mode most of the time so yeh looks like i am going too need more cards. LOL

depending I get anywhere between 160 and 200 RAW shots on a gig card

Its the only way to shoot IMHO

BBJ - there is no other way IMO to go other than RAW. Best bet is to buy another card. . .

Thanks Jordan , I see that it shoes 91 or something like that but have also read that it is wrong, so thats ok.The oldest feral here has graduating from primary school tonite, will take them in RAW as i dont have exteral flash and not sure if the onboard flash will be any good if i cant get close enough.

This may sound selfish, but I always buy myself a Chrissie present as I know it’s the only way I will get exactly what I want!!!!

BBJ; a portable storage device mite be a good Xmas wish mate??? PS: RAW is the way to go IMO.

For continuous shooting, you'll hit a hurdle at about the fourth shot if you're shooting raw.

It's a good mode to learn in when you're starting out, but if you find yourself constantly fixing the same mistakes - or even worse, taking a shot with settings you know to be bad with the intention of fixing it up later (eg. wrong White Balance), then this technique of shooting will inhibit your learning as a photographer. When you're starting out on the digital learning curve, it's best to get into good habits from the start, and not having to shed lazy/bad habits learned along the way.

Let’s leave P&S digital photography aside.

All DSLR users have a twofold sequence in taking a photograph. One - take the shot (this is the photographic side and the passion) and two - post processing.

I an ideal world what comes out of the camera should be final. But in the world of digital photography this is not always the case, hence post processing.

To have ultimate control over an image it is better it be 16 bit (RAW) rather than 8 bit (jpeg).

Is it not better at the end of the day that we are able to correct a mistake and have the photo in the bag? And remember, being technically perfect in applying the right settings on your camera does not make you a perfect photographer!

Chris PS When I take photos for clients they have to be what they want (i.e. perfect) but when I take photos as a hobby IMHO I think I am bloody useless - but I enjoy it all the same

just joined the forum and reading some of the threads…

i’ve been taking and saving RAW NEFs ever since i got my D70 a while back and i’ll let others tell you the benefits of taking RAW files

i would like to recommend that you get a portable storage device for your christmas present to store your pictures from the CF card rather than running out of space or dragging that heavy-once-you-drag-it-a-while laptop around to clear some space in the CF card

in my case, i bought an X-DrivePro, which encases a 40GB 2.5inch laptop HD (the GB size is your own choice) and acts as a multiple type card reader as well. it also serves as an mp3 player and storage for programs and files to transfer between the office and the house and it normally stays in my camera case… can’t imagine going on a weekend trip without it

but that may now be old, yet much cheaper technology… now there are two devices which you might want to check out: Nikon’s own Coolwalker and the Epson P-2000 (which i personally think is a better buy), both with their own color monitors to view the pictures saved!

so check them out, i'm sure you'll find that such storage devices are worth it

Let us know Birdy how useful the screen is in reviewing photos. After looking at a few Portable Media Devices and seeing most had 3.5/3.8" I decided that the viewing area wasn't really sufficient to review pictures. I could be wrong, hopefully somebody with experience with them can prove me wrong.

It's a real shame Hauppage didn't put a CF I/II reader on their pMVD product. That would of been really nice to have a 7" device to see images.

I'm in love with the Nikon Coolwalker but have been told from my buddies, the Epson P-2000 is far much better with very nice resolution, have to wait after Monday.

Members who come to the mini meet on Sat. 18 can have a try on them plus my brand new 200-400VR. beauti baby!!!!! .

Very nice VR, handholding for few shots.

Have to say it's hard to handholding it for few hours, the Beast!!!!

Glen is the first person shot it with Poon's D70, very impressed with the sharpness and clarity, damm fast I say, We had to take off for some other things and will try again later.

Onyx only reason i use cont mode is that i can take as many shots as i can wheather it be 1 or 3 shots, but i can control the shots as sometime if something happens like a rider falls off, and in the past have seen pointed camera and captured the action, only reason i use this mode when i am at the track.
Yes i have stolen my brothers lap top in the past to dump pics on afterwards and was ok but yeh portable storage would be nice.

Get the PSD with 40Gb is around $300.00 and you can shoot RAW for life.
I shoot RAW and alway have two cards of 2Gb + PSD, one in action and other in reserve. Never gone wrong with this way.
BBJ, you can add on another 1Gb card ($90.00 for you) cos I told you to shoot RAW and that's my fault, then I took of $30.00 from the selling price of normal 1GB 45x CF card

I have the same ceremony to photograph for my youngest feral next Tuesday and haven't really had my D70 for long enough to get acquainted with it as I should. In fact, there's only been one afternoon in the park, with around 60 shots of the same flower bed, with a short detour to two fast-swimming ducks (to test focusing options and DOF) and 40 shots of the same waterflow (testing shutter speed).

If there are any learnings you can pass on from tonight's experience with the same gig, I'd be very grateful.

Does anyone know if you can download NEF files straight from the D70 onto a Ipod?
I know this is a more expensive route and you cant view your image unless you buy the very expensive picture view Ipod,.
I'm just curious as it "maybe" on the pressie list this year.

The short answer is yes - you will need a Belkin Media Reader - transferring NEFs will discharge the battery in the shake of a Lambs tail.

Ok well i went to the young fellas graduation night with D70 in hand and set to shoot in RAW. I dont have an sb800 or anything so was upto the onboard flashand i was sitting back a bit from main stage and when i got home and opened the nef files quiet a few was dark as i was a bit too far away with the flash but i used curves to adjust and they came up great.

I know now i will not shoot in jpeg if i can help it as i also know there was no way i could have fixed these pics up in jpeg.
