Pics from todays drive to the Beach.

Hi All, Well i took the new D70 for a drive today to the beach. Was a bit warm in town here and was nice and cooler down there as well as very windy, but pleasant. Thought i would try the 70-300 G out a bit more and take a bit of getting used to but oneday i will get the hang of everything, anyhow here is the link to pics i took today, no uv or cpl filter but is on the list very soon and all these shots are hand held.

you will find once you get a cpl it will stay on your lens more often then not.

Where's your CPL filter, use it, don't keep it in the box it'll be out of date soon. See the "use by date on the box"

Hi Birddog and yeh shots come up ok but the i need to get filters as ones i got birddog are for the 18-70 which is 67mm and the 70-300 is 62mm so it seems as i did think of that but yeh wasnt till i tried it that it dont fit.
So need to get a couple of 62mm filteres when i can afford it, will get the uv filter soon to atleast protect the lens.
Thanks all for mention on pics to hard to chase a birdt around with a tripod. LOL

Get a stepdown ring for the 70-300G use 1 CPL filter for both lenses.
UV + CPL filter, check price in Bargain section under new filter stock.

Ok Birddog so a stepdown ring will do the job then, wasnt sure but yes i seen the filters in the bargins Thread. I have put the UV filter on the kit lens but will look for a step down ring and see about getting 1 of them.

Thanks Matt, Glad you thinks so, LOL I am learning as a lot of us are i supose, always something to learn although i am new to the photography scene, but have got the bug and i look at things different nowdays.
Main thing is i have fun and enjoy the pics i turn out, but i am no pro so i might think they are ok others might not. But only 1 way to learn.

Was interested in xerebus comment re CPF staying on the lens most of the time. Do many people use this a lot of the time when outdoors, or more specifically when trying for "cloud" shots or on very hazy days? Comments appreciated.

BBJ, don't buy step-down you need a step-up from a 62mm lense mouth to a 67mm filter thread. I made this mistake the first time I went to Vanbar and ended up having to exchange all my rings.

So for a lense such as the 70-300G which has a 62mm mouth, and if you have a 67mm filter (say for the kit lense) then you'll need a:

1 x Step-Up 62-67


However I think you've already posted the correct terminology in another thread when you were trying to purchase from centre.net.

Everybody is telling you to use a CPL filter. My advice is not to use a CPL filter. It will cost you 2 stops of light and that is too high a price for somtehing you can dial in using Photoshop.
Everybody has their own way of doing things and that's my way.
(Putting my head down now...gonna cop some flak).

Hi Matt, Yes mate not so much for the cpl filter but even the uv filter i have. Mainly to protect the lens as i already have these filters just that if i want to use a different lens i can put the stepup ring on to protect it.

For what it's worth,

I keep my cpl off, and put it on when needs be (middle of the day light, want to darken the sky, want to cut through unwanted glare and reflection from glass or water, or sometimes I simply want a longer shutter speed. It seems that there are two classes, some are filter people and some aren't. My opinion is that unless I'm selling the photos to sophisticated buyers, I'm hardpressed to see the quality difference (assuming the filter is of good quality).

Most filters now can be substituted in PS, however, and Matt can correct me on this, CPL has functions that can't be manipulated in Photoshop (based on things I've read and people I've spoken with). Glare on water for example, or the white puffiness of clouds with a deep blue sky.

Another thing, I like to reduce the amount of time I have to spend in Photoshop as much as possible, so filters for me is a good option. Some like to do everything in Photoshop. THey wine and dine it like a mediterranean woman in Cancun...no wait...Southern France...ah nevermind.

Actually, I'll be dining at one of my favourite restaurants - Las Brisas - in SoCal over the holidays. They state on their menu that their cuisine is from the Mexican Riviera.

And don't tell Leigh, but there's apparantly a TuTuTango in OC as well, and Walt (my friend in OC) has suggested we dine their as well.

Yes, you are correct. There are times when you certainly would need to use the CPL, as you have indicated. I guess I'm speaking more to those who beleive there is some justification in leaving it on all the time.

I see your point now.

Leaving it on all the time may be convenient, but it is not ideal at all in my experience. Here we have dark cloudy days and I need the extra light often, or I want the nice silvery reflection in water, or the sky is already a deep enough blue. Sometimes I get artsy and stack cpl on a red and black out the sky.

The main reason is the more light you can have travelling into your sensor the better unless you are purposefully trying to get slow shutter speeds IMHO. So I've decided that I'll make the decision for a CPL for each individual shot (a bit of a pain, but I don't mind taking my time.)
