Finally, some Hong Kong shots

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Nce photos, one observation is that Sharp lenses are wasted in HK. Is there always that much smog in the harbour?

Hong Kong - it is truely one of the best cities to visit, yes? :D

I really like all of your photos. Well done!

The Tai Chi photo seems to show (now I might be wrong here - so go easy, if that is the case), some moire above the Tai Chi Man.

Is this correct, or is the moire I'm seeing a result of post processing?

Almost always. :( I love HK, the smog is the only thing that bugs me about it. Without that it would almost be my perfect city (at this point in my life) I reckon! :)

Great pics Vicareyus, and you're right, that 24-120 VR pic is amazing, extremely impressive!

Mine barely leaves the body. Isn't it just the greatest lens, and such good value for money too.


Oh yes, great shots, especially this one. I need to take mine for a walk one evening. Perhaps when I get a free evening.

Thanks one and all for the kind comments.

Christiand - I tend to use P and A only. A when I have the time to compose and think, but generally when Im walking around with camera in hand, I have it set on P and have a look at aperture and shutter reading before fully depessing shutter. If Id like something else, then I do it through A. But I must say, for "opportunistic" photos, P does pretty well.

Phillipb - Smog is a bit of a problem in Hong Kong, but then again there are many photo opportunities to make up for it. It is a great place to get around with a camera in hand.

Bago - You are correct I think - both Tai Chi man and the glass building with reflections exhibited waht I understand as moire before processing - maybe I might have mdade these worse with PP sharpening. I dont know the origins of this (and now having done a google search I see there are a number of complex theories) and dont know what to do about it! Seems to happen in highly patterned images. Would like to know the way around it - any suggestions?

Excellent images! That lens is razor sharp! Got me thinking about one of those now...(Lens Lust...a non treatable medical condition passed on by Birddog).
As for the moire, I think from memory that Nikon Capture has a tool for easing that back a bit.

Great images!
Sunrise pic is fantastic. I think the smog adds to the "moody" quality of the photo.
The hand held shot with 24-120VR is amazing! Another item to include in the letter to Santa... :D
