Wet cleaning?

Postby greencardigan on Wed Nov 16, 2005 9:07 am

Having never done a wet clean myself, I wonder how clean it is possible to get the sensor. Absolutely no dust visable at all? Or is that impossible??

I called in at Maxwells the other day and got my sensor cleaned. Took a test shot before I left and found a few smallish bits of dust still there. I didn't know whether to put up with it or get it recleaned.

Hi GC
if you were persistant enough, you should be able to get it spotless - but it would take a few attempts, however unless the dust bunnies are bad enough, one good clean is usually all you'll need (each time you clean the CCD). Even if you clean your sensor to perfection, it would only be a short period of time before you'd have dust on your sensor again.

IMO...it's not worth worrying about that much....unless the DB's are "that bad" !

Hi

May I suggest getting a Giotto air rocket first and try blowing the dust away yourself.

Yeah, I plan to get a rocket in the near future. I was at Maxwells anyway regarding a repair job so asked for a clean while I was there. I just assumed the sensor would be 'clean' after a clean.

Where's the best place to pick up a Giotto air rocket??

GC, that is pretty standard after a Maxwell clean. There is a big gap between usably clean, which generally wont show on photos and spotlessly clean.

I have some pure alcohol to wet clean my sensor.
it is easy just take a big slug of the alcohol the get on with the cleaning :D

My cameras cop a beating in bad conditions so I need to be able to clean while in the field.

(A) blow

(C) Wet clean

Jack Daniels & Wild Turkey bourbon should be added into the process as prep.
I don't know about the pure alcohol but pure methanol is a must & I use the Giotto Air Rocket to blow the dust inside the chamber same as the CCD and normally its cleaned, not required the wet method.
Last resort is doing the wet clean with Pec*Pad and methanol.

Good to see someone else from the gong on this site. Welcome. That dust probably came from Sydney.

All the very best for your exams. Just let me know when and where in due course. BTW: Wet cleaning sounds harder than what is really is. If I can do it anybody can.

Dug...what brush do you use? One you bought from a camera store for the job or did you prepare one yourself?
