Not sure where I could post this, so here it is.... I just put in an order for a D70s with the 18-70 kit lens

I'd been hovering between that and the D50, and occasionally even considering the 350D, but settled on the D70s in the end. I was only going to replace the D50's kit lens with the 18-70 ANYWAY, so why not get it straight away with the D70s!

I ordered it through Camera Farm, who tell me that I should be able to pick it up in the 1st or 2nd week in Dec. That suits me fine as I can only get it after 8th Dec anyway (Flying overseas in Jan, so I can claim back the GST component).

I might also see if I can find the 50mm 1.8 prime that everyone raves about, and maybe the value-for-money 70-300G. I've been guilty in the past of unnecessarily blowing money on equipment way beyond my capabilities, so I'm not going to worry too much about getting the absolute best lenses right away.

Been lurking here for a couple of weeks, hopefully I can contribute to the discussions properly once I get the camera

You have make a big mistake by not getting the 350D

Sorry! you've done well and get into the right direction, and you'll find this place with more talk about Nikon stuff than other, but we welcome all.

Get the kit lens and play around with it first, then you'll see what do you actually want for the next lust.

Get the 50 1.8; steer well clear of the 70-300G, and keep your money for something better.

I rarely use my 1.8. I got it because it was a great deal. I've used it like twice I think. I say go with the kit lens, and figure out what you're missing, then save and get it.

I want/need the 30mm1.4. Perfect range for something as fast as that. I also need a superwide. I have 70-300 ed, and rarely use that as well. I don't find myself ever wishing for more reach than 70mm. And now that there's an 18-200 coming out, it might make a handy lens... of course I don't have the money for any of it.

Maybe I should just stop listening to you lot I'm no stranger to gadget-lust - on one of the guitar forums I used to frequent a few years ago, it was called GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome. I know all about it. But damned if I can stop it

I'm considering the 70-300 because the range is pretty useful to have (it's quite nice to have the option on my Olympus 2100, which zooms to 380mm). It's not SUPER-important, so I was considering the G lens as a budget option. What I might do is borrow a 70-300 from a mate who has one, and then seeing if I like that range. I might not even use it that much. Even now with my current gear, I think my nicest shots have been in the 38-100 sort of range.

Anyway, first thing's first, I'll get the camera and kit lens in a couple of weeks and see how I go. I reckon I'll get the 50/1.8 though, at its price, it's a "why the hell not" type of scenario

Actually, maybe getting a decent flash would be more important than the 70-300

hi losfp and welcome. The 70-300 lens was the first lens I got. Not very useful or loved. Rarely have I used it. Prob taken no more than 30 shots with it to be honest. Why not step up to a 70-200 2.8 VR Now that's corruption!

losfp, if you're wanting the 70-300 range - I would suggest looking at Tamron and Sigma alternatives. They're around the price of the Nikkor G, but has closer focusing/macro ability and arguably image quality to match the three times more expensive Nikkor ED.

Forget about the 70-300G! you'll part it after two days.
Save up your pennies for the better lust, 50/1.8 is to start with and a SB600 or SB800, then there's the long list to look at.
You haven't start yet, haven't you? so sit back, relax and thinking what type of photography which you're going to do? and then setup the lens's range in your budget.

OK, just an example:

The range are the following and can be achieved in few brand as, Nikkor, Sigma, Tokina:

12-24/ 24-120/ 70-200 + 50mm or 85mm + fun lens as Tamron 90mm macro.

After you're recovered, then ask for another "prescription" to cure your next lust.

If you can get your hands on that lens for a couple of weeks I reckon that you would soon get over it. It is possible with effort, perserverance, technique and a little luck to get good results.
My personal preference is for lenses under 100mm. If a lens is not long enough, then I am not close enough.

50/1.8 is good value, so "why the hell not". This lens is probably one of those gems that breaks the "you get what you pay for" rule. It certainly helps to have a low light lens in your kit.

That is a good idea. Gary suggested it earlier... I'll second that. SB800 (or SB600) is money well spent - much better than the 70-300G. The other item that I rate as highly important is a decent tripod.

Once you have had the camera in your hands for a couple of weeks you're likely to figure it all out based on your needs and wants.
