Aperture softwear (apple stuff)

I asked this question yesterday and as we know 24 hours is a long time around here and instead of giving it a bump I think it may deserve a post of its own? Has anyone used Aperture? I had a play with Aperture yesterday afternoon and maybe these fruit people have something!!! I’m in the process of purchasing a real PC or something after seeing how fast Birdys worked and our Art Departments Apple with 2 monitors and a wow factor 110% its time to $$$$$ .Who here has gone the dark side with Apple and what are the benefits and features over a PC .I have only had laptops over the last 8 years and have lost touch with desktops please help me with my tax return.

No, Apple's Aperture product will not run on Windows.

It relies heavily on some of the Mac OS X API's and technologies (CoreImage/Quartz Extreme) to get the performance it does. Some of the effects and how they're done in real time are achieved by offloading some of the computational work to the GPU (graphics card). It's the same for other pro products from Apple (Final Cut Pro, Motion).

Mac OS X fits nicely for what I do - some graphics work, a desktop system that plays nice with the rest of the organisational culture (MS Office/ Exchange integration) and I have a decent unix box as well (which is the important part as I'm a unix admin . I've got both a dual G5 2.0GHz with 2GB RAM + 20" Apple Cinema Display and a PowerBook G4 1.25GHz w/ 2GB RAM. Both run Adobe CS well, and my evaluation copy of Aperture should arrive next week.

The Cinema displays are just a whole lot of wow. Colour accuracy when profiled with ColorSync (OS X built-in colour calibration) is spot on.

The Adobe products are fairly identical on both Windows and Mac, however the Mac versions often have a slightly more polished feel. The performance is about the same when using the optimisations for both (P4/SSE3 and PowerPCG5/Altevec). Some times it can be better in ideal benchmarks (but I don't want to go there... the real world is a different place).

Deciding if Mac/Windows/Linux suits you is like deciding between Nikon/Canon/Pentax-Olympus-Minolta

No, I believe Aperture only runs on OS X - in fact, probably only on OS X 10.4 and up.

I think the only Apple software (that is, software developed by Apple) that has been ported over to PC is iTunes. Commercial considerations there, of course Oh, and Quicktime too.

The other iApps, like iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD etc, along with apps like Final Cut Pro etc are only for OS X for a couple of reasons... Less of a support nightmare for them, and also to provide incentives to invest in the Mac platform

I happily use both at home... My personal computer is a 12" PowerBook, but I use PCs for my fileserver (low cost) and Home Theatre PC (specialised PC-only software and hardware)

There's a group who have been able to get Mac OSX running on Windows... so... give it time... and Aperture will run, essentially, on Windows.

Just bought some more ram for our machines here. All photo apps seem memory hungry! Then we will be running 2GB minimum. You have to love MACs for their simplicity, and if you know how to set them up, crashproofness. But I love my PC for games and non-care about $$$ factor (I just chuck it in the back of the car to transport and if anything breaks it is cheap to fix.)

Really excited about aperture. RAW will be even easier!

Yeah, but that would suck the life out of the performance, just like running Virtual PC on OS X. Maybe a more viable option would be to wait for the intel build of OS X when Apple switches over to Intel... Though I reckon they probably won't go with the x86 platform, probably some expensive custom built chip

Of course, now that I've ordered myself a nice new D70s, I can't afford to upgrade my computer for a while... And I have to keep using my 2-year-old PowerBook with its 867Mhz G4

Don’t forget you Mac owners to check ”Core Image” in system profiler under graphics/displays - if core image is not supported neither will Aperture
