I've been looking for ways to view the raw thumbnails in windows explorer before opening the files with NC, so far no luck.
I found this site but I can't get it to work
 http://www.suodenjoki.dk/us/productions ... mbnail.htm
Maybe someone else can try or if you know of any other way, please let me know.

What OS? With NC installed it works perfectly under XP.

p.s. That webpage is for Canon's format, not Nikons.

            Three things.

1) Make sure all the nikon software is installed. You may need nikon picture project to be installed ( dont think so though ).
 2) Make sure you've got the view to Thumbnails and not tiles.
 3) http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/20040905.html
Go to the above link, scroll down to the bottom of the page. Save the linked file to your desktop then double-click. Hit Ok when it asks if you want to add the information to the registry.
You might need to reboot to get the thumbnails back.

I get thumbnails of NEFs in windows explorer.

 Do you have NC installed?
Are you selecting thumbnails from the view menu in win exp?

Sorry, simple questions, but they're the things that get us sometimes...

Aha! I haven't installed Sp2, maybe that's why it works for me.

OK, I don't have SP2, I have view set to thumbnails, I have NC installed.
When I open a folder I see thumbnails of jpg files and NC icons of NEF files.
 What am I missing?

Is NC working (ie not out of trial period, or registered)?

            Greg, it is registered
Glen, I didn't install it because I thought it was for SP2, but I will try it anyway.

Onyx and Sheepie posted the same link, which contains the same information as my link, but without the easy of use..

Nikon has released a patch for the same thing by the way.. it's here:

Progress..... I used the patch and I can now see the thumbnails with the words "Unregistered copy" on them.
 Where do you register?

That sounds like a Nikon Capture problem, not a win problem. Do a search for Alan or Allan (not sure which) and you will find a link to help with NC

NC is registered (latest copy too vers 4.1.3), the "unregistered version" is only on the thumbnails.

You don't have another thumbnailing product installed do you?
 Something 3rd party?
The Program NEFview exhibits the exact behaviour you've described.
