e_xtreme = boring??I replied to cc@t regarding a post using the word "e_xtreme" (had to use an underscore in the subject line otherwise it says "boring") and it made me look like a total dickhead because it came up as "boring". Have I missed something here? Try it for yourself

Gary has an interesting sense of humour and one outlet is the forum word filter so certain words get changed whenever they appear. eg you can say fuck, but you can't say k@r@oke since if you do you'll see mate in public There's some to and for on this in this thread (start part way down page) Edit: Beat me Trent. This one is the first to really generate some questions. Maybe mating in public is OK Peter

ghost - one other thing - it's a good idea to put your location in your profile since this can sometimes help when you ask questions (no point telling someone in the UK to come to a mini meet)

Well after seeing my posts changed I had to breathe into a paper bag for a while due to the excitement of the change.
Anyway it seems that we need to accept that at some point someone in Sydney will change words in your post to mean something different. I got too excited before but, hey this is an ametuer (although great) forum so you just have to take it. Noone means anything by it, it is apparently entertainment destined for the masses. I would personally like to go to a mini meet and meet our benefactors, as I am sure my sense of humour would match theres. I hate beubg a Mexican.

Er, no. Nobody goes in and changes your words. Nobody! That would imply that we're just sitting here, watching every post that everybody else makes. That's neither possible, nor practical, and if you truly believe that your posts are that signiificant a work of literature, then this place, clearly, is not the appropriate forum for you to be in. Beyond that, we have lkives that extend way beyond what happens here. Again, no person has any involvement in changing your words, so please, Skyva, just get over it!
What's stopping you? Leigh and I personally attended one in Melbourne when we were there for the F1GP earlier this year, and our Melbourne members often organise meets around town in order to take photos of things that interest them. And if there's an event that you find of interest, post a message about it in these forums and see whom else shares your interest. You might be surprised at how easy it is to arrange one. g.

Trent, I would view this particular fish as a perfect catch. Ghost's usage of this word is exactly the usage that I find extremely annoying. g.

That's not quite what Skyva said and if I'm not mistaken, not at all what he/she meant.
So it just happens by magic? This totally contradicts previous statements that you had direct involvement in adding e_xtreme to the word censor list. So which one is it? I know this won't change anything, but i'd like to add my name to the list of people who really don't appreciate having words put in their mouths and aren't afraid to say so. I appreciate that you think it's funny, but that doesn't mean I have to agree. It does seem rather a waste of time and space to keep rehashing this for amusement's sake. Rog, Actually, and with all due respect, it is precisely what he said. Please reread the quoted bits above; those words were taken directly from his posting; I did not make them up. I accept that it might not be what he meant to say, but I cannot be held responsible for other people not being clear or concise in their postings, can I?
His posting suggested, to me, that some person had gone in and, after he had completed his posting, made a change to it. That is quite simply not the case, and that is the end of the story as far as that goes. Yes, there are words in the word filter, and yes, I put them there. I accept that some people might not like it, but with all due respect, nobody is forcing anybody to post messages here, and nobody forces anybody to stay. People seem to hang around here because, I can only presume, they like it, and that must mean that they also like the way that these forums are managed. As is mentioned in the thread that Trent referred to, and as is mentioned in the FAQ, you need to enter these forums with your sense of humour in place. And while I fully appreciate that several might not think it's funny, there seems to be a growing majority who seem to enjoy this. Certainly, we seem to regularly enjoy a hearty laugh about it at the minimeets.
I agree. Please try to impress that point upon those who persist in resurrecting it; I'm simply responding to comments that others have made, so please don't shoot the messanger in this case. g.

I think what he means is, and what you're avoiding or trying to interpret as, is that we're not so much watching the posts but leaving word censors in there so as not to change his words... but rather, change how the forum interprets the words.
You're right. It won't. I don't have a problem with people who aren't afraid to say so.
Of whose time and whose space? Space-wise, it takes up a few kilobytes on the server and a few lines where a brief laugh occurs at the expense of a word or two. Time-wise... what time is lost? Here, right now in this thread, we're having a somewhat intelligent discussion on the word filter and no time is being lost. If you don't like talking about this and feel it is indeed a waste of your time... then... why are you reading this or even replying to it? Surely it's not so much a waste of time if you feel a need to talk about it so. A "waste of time" is something people would generally ignore... not debate or talk about.
So don't. Aside from making your text look like a lamer-newbie, you won't gain anything from it and you'll look stupid in the process. Hey, I'll... err... even use your example of typing to help you out! L o o k, u n l e s s y o u p l a n o n t y p i n g o r t a l k i n g a b o u t a b u n c h o f " e x t r e m e K l i n g o n s t h a t a t t a c k t h e w o r l d t h r o u g h k a r a o k e , " y o u ' v e r e a l l y g o t n o t h i n g t o w o r r y a b o u t. Seriously, if this sort of crap worries you, don't let it. We like to screw with people's minds. In fact, the term I use specifically in the way I do it is "I like to fuck with people's minds"... and we'll occasionally throw the odd joke out there for people to trip up on. Usually it's divided... we'll find people who were pissed about and people who were laughing about it... and that's a typical balance... The ones who laughed aren't taking themselves ridiculously seriously... the ones who got pissed... well... Last edited by Nnnnsic on Thu Dec 01, 2005 11:43 am, edited 4 times in total.

Nothing like extreme mate in public
New page

While I am extreme in every way, I have not yet been hit by the filter for using words like extreme. I can also understand Garys dislike for the word extreme... I find all of this very funny. (and would love to know what else is one the list... might have to start saying random things!)
What does get me a little annoyed is how much this has been covered over the last month and how people are still leaving there humour at the door before coming in. Its not like there is 10,000 words on this list. I believe Gary has mentioned before the list contains about 8-10 words! Surley we can get by with out them! I do understand that we have new members joinging constanly, but do we have to get to a point where Gary and others become involved in the same discussion that we've had over and over... come on guys... let the boss have his fun and lets all enjoy a laugh when we notice it... It can make for some extreme funny moments Cheers D4, D700, plus glass from 14mm to 200mm

Fair enough, perhaps it is ambiguous. It could be "someone in Sydney will --go in and-- change words" or it could be "someone in Sydney will change words (by means of the word filter)".
I've seen all the threads and FAQs explaining this, that's why I expect no change.
My bugbear is that those who might not think it's funny appear to have an otherwise intact sense of humour. If you want to have fun at others' expense in an otherwise communal forum, so be it. It's ok, I'll drop it.
The gun wasn't loaded, I was just registering an opinion. It's done and dusted now. This post needs some extra smileys, just in case. Yours in sharing boring extreme tlhIngan mate in public, -- Rog

You absolute bastards.
Your word filter just changed the words in one of my profound statements which was going to change society as we know it. The hide of you. Oh, Sorry, mispost, wrong forum, this is the forum where I shoot the breeze about photography stuff
One final word from me, this isn't about what the filtered words are, how many there are or how important someone's voice is, it's the principal of having a forum where what you say is what is recorded. Principal ... ooh, there's one to add to the list if you want to annoy people.

Of course, this is all the more amusing because I read most of the forum activity via RSS and hop over to the web version when I want to post something.
The word filter does not apply to the RSS feed, and thus I keep reading threads saying things like "when I type Foo I expect to see Foo but instead I see Bar" where from the web it's like "when I type Bar I expect to see Bar but instead I see Bar"...
Fair enough... I can see your point there. But I guess in the end its Gary's choice and well he hasn't budged yet! D4, D700, plus glass from 14mm to 200mm

Dave, I noticed that too, was wondering if we were talking financially or possibly about the head of a school, but in the interests of not prolonging the discussion or picking on anyone spelling, didn't point it out. Hugely different meanings. Glad I am not the only one who notices such things
Geez it seems my simple post has caused some extreme controversy (again) . I'm not really a fan of the word Xtreme but used it talking about "Xtreme sport" which is a term some guru somewhere invented. Anyway I found it quite funny and don't have a problem with it. I guess I was like Darb when he first got caught out, I thought "what the", I could'nt believe my eyes. I did all these tests to make sure what I could see happening was actually happening (which I guess is funny in itself!).
Looks like I took it hook, line & sinker. I'll be wiser next time. ghost
I'm surprised people haven't worked it out by now. If you read my post on this page in response to Rog, you'll find some nice hints as to what is censored. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

And what you say is recorded. If you go back in and edit your post, you will see that it's unchanged. The only change is how it's rendered upon presentation, and then only within the confines of this forum; if the RSS feed was still operational, you would see the unchanged posts in there too. g.

Some marketing dickhead, more likely. Yes, I know that's tautological ... And while it's one of the most offensive uses of the expression, IMHO, when I see people talking about such things as xtreme programming (I'm a systems analyst, and there is no such thing), it just gets my goat. Total, complete, and, dare I say it, xtreme, OTT abuse of the language.
Exactly. Think of it as a form of intelligence test, if you will. I have, for a long time, been fond of messing with the PCs of other persons: loading strange fonts at boot time; Changing environmental settings to something that looks correct to all intents and purposes, but one that does not behave as you might expect it to. Generally speaking, I will do things that are somewhat subtle (there have been exceptions) and in all honesty, the more subtle, the better. And for Rog, yes, I can accept that some people might have a good sense of humour but still not find this amusing. Different people have different mindsets - none would be better nor worse than another, but simply different. I know many people who do not, for instance, appreciate the humour in HHGTTG. Similarly, many people enjoy Sienfeld, which I find almost as loathesome as things like Pig Brudder or Oz Idle.. My guess is that what we're doing with the word filters has more appeal to those who might appreciate Cleese, as opposed to Hill. And that is as it should be. g.

However... On the other hand - this could be the cause of your CPU usage problem It's certainly unnecessary processing that happens every time a message is posted...
