I think it needs to be said that it is just ONE boring shot (never intended to be an interesting shot, by the way) in a veritable torrent of boring shots that flood this site daily. (In saying that please understand that I DID NOT suggest that ALL the shots presented are boring. Nor did I suggest that there is not a place for what to some appear to be BORING shots.) I don't mind copping the stick but I am sure as hell going to see that it is shared.
In further response to Matt K's suggestion that I revisit this site in quest of what he might consider better or more interesting shots let me say that I have visited this motif on many occasions shooting in black & white and I do have other shots of it which may or may not appeal more to the masses here. But it is not my habit to post 'finished' works on the internet anywhere or for anyone. Cheers, _______________

I must say, this thread beats the hell out of reading about how good the D200 is going to be (IMHO)
I guess the other side of photography is what the "viewer" sees in the image, or gets out of it. What SheetShooter has kindly demonstrated here is that views will vary greatly and those very passionate about their views, and their love for photography will sometimes clash and be bought to the forefront. Whether you're a pro, an amateur, an experimentalist or not will be of little consequence when your opinion is questioned. We are but all human (well, from what I understand anyway ) and as such, will act with human weakness. In light of this, the internet is possibly one of the hardest places to get your point across as you cannot reflect tone in what is typed. Words can be taken out of context or in a way unintended by the writer. It is also accessible to people from all walks of life, with differing ranges of comprehension for the English language. What can we do ? Get over it ! PS.. experimentation doesn't always have to be about the image Dave

Walter,
I suspect that Kipper's "boring" comment was actually a comment modified by our word filter, within which I have less than 10 words, and the word "xtreme" is magically transformed into "boring" because of my personal dislike of the way in which that word has become abused and misused in our mdern society. Such are the benefits of running a board such as this ... I can exclude words and temrs that I simply don't like. All: please do not use this as an excuse to discuss the word filter: I offer this only as a clarification for Walter, and any other comments on the word filter will be considered to be off topic and will be deleted. g.

I think that's a shame but respect this as your right / choice. The reason I think this is that I for one learn a lot from this site - by reading comments and by viewing images. I learnt a lot by reading all of this thread. I like to look at posts in the Image Reviews and Critiques section and judge them for myself - what I like about them, what I don't, what I would do differently, then read on to see whether people more experienced that me think similar things. People like, among others, you. It is frustrating being on dialup, it limits how much I can view. I do not want to pass comment on what I think is good or otherwise about this image as it was not posted in the Image Reviews and Critiques section. In any case, it has already been well and truly said. I will pass comment, though, on what I personally get from studying this image. It gives me ideas. It makes me think. I will apologize now for not thinking too much about what you were trying to achieve with this particular image. I instead think about being at the location and working out what I would do, what I would like the look of, what I have learnt from other shoots I have done, and other images I have seen. This is probably not the place for me to go on about what I would have done... that wasn't the point. That's just my point - what I get out of it. There's lots of buildings like this in Tassie - I am looking forward to getting the camera back from repair and I am looking forward to getting a D200. I congratulate you for creating such an interesting discussion. A great read. It got me thinking about "experimental" among other things, though my definition would be more "educational" for with experiments there are successes and failures, but with education there is a lesson. Whether the lesson teaches me to do something again / more of / less of, or not to do, I still learn. I am not sure about the comment about it being more interesting than reading about the D200... (tongue in cheek)... Share what you know, learn what you don't.

Thanks Tasadam,
The vast majority of the commercial work that I produce I do not have rights in to publicly distribute or display and so that is one boil on the bum of sharing. Another aspect which has more to do with my personal work is that it is invaribly a part of an ongoing larger project and I do not often shoot for 'stand-alone' pictures and so an isolated image out of context, even though it might be more deliberate and more considered than this technical test, would be likely to come in for the same sort of bagging. Unlike with most other members of this site critiques of my words and works often end up becoming aimed at me rather than the image or text and I have to confess I do not find that very palatable. So would I be eager to submit myself to more such sniping? I envy you all those Georgian buildings down there. I am amazed at just how quickly real estate prices in Tassie are rising and once the folk from the big end of town start buying up, renovating and redeveloping all that treasure trove of subjects will be gone forever. My recommendation would be to get out shooting whatever and whenever you can. Cheers, _______________

Walter, don't take my post seriously. I was only trying to create some more controversy via Gary's word filter. I didn't think the shot was overly bad, and I think the subject had potential. I do feel that better lighting and angle might of helped with this shot though as I'm a one of those persons who hates sunlight after 9am and before 5pm during summer. Then again if somebody can put up a shot taken in direct sunlight that works during these times I might be able to change my mind, but so far I'm not convinced. For the subjects I shoot, which are mostly the feathered kind it produces harsh contrasts from areas that are in direct sunlight to those that are not. So I try to shoot earlier hours or dusk as the sun will usually be eye level. When ever I do landscapes (which has been a long time) I prefer to do it at this time aswell.

Kipper,
It was not your post that I alluded to. I have no problem with your comments - they are about the picture as they should be. I just chuck the occasional wobbly when it gets personal. I don't think in any of my critiques or posts I have ever played the man (despite a strong desire to at times) and always tried to keep my comments on the 'philosophical' and 'narrative' aspects of pictures rather than a particular crop or level of saturation etc. I love your bird shots and always check them out just as I always look at Blacknstormy's work ... and others. No hard feelings. You were not the first to have the word 'boring' in your post and, unlike yours, the others were not as a result of the Cyber Cops. All the best for the season .... _______________

Vacant Posession -
And speaking of posession... it's interesting how parents see themselves as posessing their kids. eg. "Don't take a photo of my kids", denotes not so much the paranoia against the assumed photographer about to take a photo, but for me the standout is as emphasised, the implied ownership of the kids. It's sad when people go to extremes to impose their will upon others, it's even more sad when those others have not yet developed the capacity to form their own opinions and are in essence trapped into believing what's forced down their throats. cf Lamb and Lynx Gaede. The 'Olsen twins' representatives of the white supremists/KKK/Neo-Nazi movement in North America. BTW I think they are terrible singers - completely off tune and in line with the majority of Aust Idol winners/rejects (winners and rejects in this case could be used interchangeably IMO). I am reminded of an episode of The Simpsons, where Homer made a remark regarding Marge: "See this ring on her finger? That's my ring. That means I own her". I thought it was a most hilarious quote from Homer. Of course we know he wasn't being serious.... Just adding another post as off topic as the preceeding pages of this thread has become. Sheetshooter - my original post of a $5 bid was alluding to the fact that I thought this thread may have been inadvertendly started in the wrong forum, and was meant for image review and critique rather than gen discussion - hence in my 'nobody gets me' humour, I posted a reply befitting the For Sale forum.
Onyx, How much did you say that fish cost?
You know, if that photo was posted by a novice, it would have got half a dozen replies of "nice shot" but from a pro, we have covered everything from experiments to bart simpson. This site should be made compulsary for psycology students. __________

Onyx, Not so funny really when you consider that the process of a 'WEDDING' is that one man GIVES a woman away (usually his daughter) to another man. Frankly I find the concept totally repugnant and consequently don't hold 'weddings' in terribly high regard. By the way, your humour is never lost on me. I'm generally on your wave-length.
