New toy for Christmas - opinions...

Postby Geoff on Thu Dec 08, 2005 10:39 am

Hi all,
I just saw the new Ipod Video (30gb and 60gb versions) and have been blown away by it's quality etc and the ability to use your camera cable and t/f from your camera to the ipod to store photos whilst on the run! Would appreciate people's opinions on this. It's also a a video player with a great little screen with pretty good resolution. The 60gb version is $598.

No, it's one of OTG devices, and no one achieved with this method as yet!

For this price, go with the Epson P2000.

It is a great little device, but I do agree with birddog.

You can make slideshows and when you see a potential client just wack it out and show them the show  maximum cool factor.

ps. IF you are getting it......try to get Edu pricing

The Epson P2000 can do more than the IPOD as slide show, movie, storage, MP3, for that price the Epson P2000 is more value than the Ipod.

The way of transferring to the Ipod from the camera via a USB cable linked to the D70 USB 1 port, it's sloooooooooooooow and you're not able to do it while you're on shooting assignment as we had discussed here before. It's the very OLD Fashion of OTG.
You can imagine you have the D70 hanging around your neck and the Ipod in your pocket for transferring files, are you sure that the cable stay put with two devices?.
The OTG device is only good when you're stationed, in the hotel, in your office, bedroom, kitchen with no movements so the USB cable won't jump out the ports.

Wrong, the Epson P2000 is not only the PSD, it plays everything which the Ipod can play. Want a bet? bring your Ipod over and we compare.

Hi Geoff, get a dedicated PSD, the transfer will be much faster then using the ipod.

ps. I know a couple of photographers that are incorporating an ipod into there packages..so instead of giving the files on dvd/cd too clients they give them a ipod with files inside and also create a slideshow too.

Nothing called duty free at this modern age in photographic gears.
Duty Free is normally nearly double the retail prices.

Client meets P1..all is well. They meet P2 groom or bride see ipod and always wanted an ipod. They book P2

Buy at RRP price and claim GST back at TRS. It's the only way how to deal with new modern duty free way.

I don't think the Epson plays mp4 movie files and it damn well doesn't support Divx which, while that's not supported by the iPod, it's still supported by the Creative and Iriver video playback devices.

I have to agree with Vince here.

The Epson is a great PSD... but it's mp3 playback is limited, I'd hedge my bets that the sound quality isn't anything that special, and its video playback filetypes is just weak... gooooo fullsize mpegs!!!

Mind you, I'd like to see the new Creative portable video / mp3 player they've got out with a CF slot... that could be very interesting and while it doesn't support RAW at this point, that could be solved using a simple firmware upgrade.

We are talking in between two devices: Ipod vs Epson P2000 and both devices don't have the same thing as Creative & Iriver.

The new upgraded firmware fixed that. But again what the main reason which people want it for? you can't have all perfect stuff in one device or you'll never find one.

Mind you, I'd like to see the new Creative portable video / mp3 player they've got out with a CF slot... that could be very interesting and while it doesn't support RAW at this point, that could be solved using a simple firmware upgrade.

It's another crappy device from Creative Labs, and Creative Labs won't support the RAW files nor intent to have it with upgraded firmware + the cost of it also.

End the day, depend on what the buyer wants, Pros & Cons are in both.

Wow I've opened up a can of worms here eh? :)
The Ipod won't view RAW files but all I want it to do is store the files (which it will do) until I get home to the PC etc.
I also like the size (so small) of the Ipod.

Where's the PSD which Bel bought for you last Xmas?
It works better in transferring files from CF to storage than the Ipod.
The pain of transferring in between Ipod and your camera is done via a USB cable or we called it OTG, and it's slow.

I still have the PSD Birdy but the battery life of it is a little dissapointing. After being on charge for a whole night I'm lucky to t/f maybe 2x1gb cf cards before the battery starts to die.

But it will read jpgs, right?

So, if you shoot raw + jpg, what, precisely, is the issue here?

There are of course other issues that might preclude one from buying into an iPod, but I don't view this as being amongst them.

The issue here is transferring files from the D70 to iPod via a USB cable and do it on the move. Otherwise it's OK.

Geoff, my advice is to buy more CF cards, forget about the ipod/psd.

Transfer your images when you get home (assuming you are talking about a paid job not on holidays).

I've been told that it takes about 5 mins to t/f 1gb to the IPod to camera via cable. Will test out tomorrow.

It depends on what type of camera and its USB port, the transferring rate is varied from camera to camera.

Yes, perhaps Geoff wants to do this way

The problem here lies with the slowness of the D70's USB 1 connection, as the iPod supports USB 2.

The positives of the iPod are its small size and weight - also the new ones are getting very very good with battery life. You can not compete with the P2000's screen though.

The positives of the iPod are its small size and weight - also the new ones are getting very very good with battery life. You can not compete with the P2000's screen though.

HB,

I thought about this too, but in the end I bought a dedicated PSD (actually I bought two - PD70x and Digimate II).

My reasons?

1. Speed. iPod is slooooooow.
2. Space. 60GB is as big as the iPod comes. I have about 30GB of music + videos I would put on it. That leaves 30GB for photos. Not enough. And don't even think about deleting music when you are travelling to make space. I don't fancy deleting 300 songs just to clear 1 GB of space 8)
3. Reliability. I place more faith in a laptop HDD than the 1.8" HDDs in the iPod. iPod gets bounced around etc in pockets, dropped maybe. I wouldn't want to handle my PSD with my precious photos like that.

So I will be buying an iPod to fulfil my music requirements.

It's also flexible - my wife can use the iPod at work and I can still take a PSD with me out shooting.

Canon 20D and a bunch of lovely L glass and a 580EX. Benro tripod. Manfrotto monopod. Lowepro and Crumpler bags. And a pair of Sigma teleconverters, and some Kenko tubes.

DionM,
Yes, buy one of each device, one for you, one for the wife, one for neighbour, one for the dog and one for the cat
and swapping them around when you need.

Perhaps, myself never listen to the music on the move so MP3 is out of my wish, I only need something robust as the Epson to carry around and transfer photos when required.
