Lost: One avatar

Postby johnd on Wed Dec 14, 2005 1:49 pm

Dear mods, can you please help me with this?

My avatar is missing. I changed my avatar a couple days ago from my PC at home. The avatar is 100pix X 100pix and is 6kb, so should meet the requirements. When I access DSLRUsers from my PC at home or at work, either as guest or Johnd, I can see my avatar in my posts. When someone looks at my posts, they tell me they can't see the avatar. Glen just advised me and I checked with O1 and he can't see it either.

Just double checked and it's 6021 bytes, which is strictly smaller than 6k (6144), I will shrink the avatar a bit tonight to see if that makes a difference. I uploaded the avatar from my home PC, not from pixspot or anywhere like that. Any other possibilities?

I just checked from another PC and I can't see my avatar from the other PC. Maybe I can only see it because it's cached on my PC at work and at home. Weird?

Cheers, John

John,

Strange.

I can't see it here - not against your name, nor, when I go into your record, does it seem to be there.

What sort of file (ext) is it?

Perhaps try uploading it again?

I can see it. Maybe it's cached DNS weirdness?

the URL changed recently from d70users to dslrusers right? Maybe the old IP/domain is still cached on some ISPs and stuffing up.

I know we're having similar problems with a couple of sites we are working on at work.

It's just been pointed out to me that our merchandise images are no longer rendering either. Tey should be visible on the main page, towards the bottom, in the LH column.

I'm incl;ined to treat these two issues as related, although the observation regarding the domain name differences (I'm using them in separate namespaces at the moment, so there may be an issue I've neglected to address thee) is a valid point for me to investigate.

Gary,
it's to do with the domain name.

http://www.dslrusers.net/viewtopic.php?p=147185

and

http://www.dslrusers.com/viewtopic.php?p=147185

should give identical pages however you will see that avaters are different & missing depending on which page you're looking at.

That's how the problem manifests itself, but it's not what the problem is. :)

And I know exactly what the actual problem is; I need to work out a smart solution to this. :)

In brief, it's user error ID-ten-T with me as the cause. :)

Gary, I didn't want to bug you with this, but thought it might help if you are still looking into why some images don't display.

I noticed the merchandise images are back, so I uploaded my avatar again. I made it about 75 X 94 pixels, 5302 bytes in size. It still doesn't display on some PCs (O1s at work for instance) but display's OK on my PC at home and my PC at work, both when logged into Johnd and when guest. I uploaded it by browsing to my temp folder on my PC at home.

Hope this information is useful.

Regards, John

John,

They were both different versions of the same issue - user error ID-ten-T - with me as the protagonist, but they're two entirely different

I've fixed the merchandise image problem because it was dead simple to fix; your avatar issu - and it will affect others too - is far more complex, and requires me to think of a smart solution.

Therein lies the challenge. :)
