Universal Remote

Has anyone used one of these? Price is certainly right (1/3 of the shipping costs) but I wondered if they really worked? The mirror reflector and the on-board LED light are clever.

I've only tested mine on my 350D in the lounge room. Mostly worked fine, in that I had a few strange issues where I would take 5 pictures, then it wouldn't work. So I moved closer, nothing. Then it would shoot again.

I have used it also at night with my tripod and beach shots. Worked everytime no hassles, but I was using the remote under 3cm from the camera. Just so I didn't get any camera shake with the long exposure. I did find the little LED light helpful here. Great idea.

As I have posted in the Canon Coral, there was a firmware fix for the 350D for this remote issue. I have applied the firmware but not tested the remote to see if it works again 100%.

I haven't tried the reflector part as I haven't needed it.

For the price I paid, I think it's great.

I will do some loungroom tests again and see if it's now working fine.

Did you notice the cost of shipping?

For about the same cost you can buy a un iversal remote at Jaycar that operates your D70, but the reality is that the geniune Nikon remotes are so cheap that one really shouldn't bother with these.

As to the use of the mirror for trigerring the camera from behind, they're saying that you need to use a rubber band, which is not supplied. Hmmm .... sounds like a load of horse manure to me.

I'm unconvinced that this is a bargain buy.

I received mine two days ago, haven't had a lot of use yet.
Seems to work well, even from behind the camera without the reflector attached to the lens.
At that price they are good value it would seem.

In a typical loungeroom, any IR remote should work without the need for a special mirror or any other reflector.

Try this quick experiment. Point your tv or vcr's remote at the wall opposite the unit in question and see how well it operates the device. It should do this with no major issues.

So too should any good remote, with the device for which it's intended.

I've been really happy with the Nikon genuine remote and so wasn't looking seriously at a replacement. I just thought others may be interested in this and, hey, I'm a gadget nut so what can I say?

Simon, most of James Bond's watches have lasers. I think I might wait til I can get one of those. Then all I need to do is find some stuff to burn with the laser

I think there was a post somewhere here which says how you can modify a remote controller bought from Jaycar and works on the D70 perfectly. Saves you heaps in shipping and cost.

I can't see anything more it can do, there is only one button next to the Nikon section with S on it, is there more info somewhere else which explains the extra functions? Not that I would believe it, you can only do what the camera has receivers for.

I would buy the ML3 or Jaycar, I have both and both work well, the ML3 slightly better
