Is there a problem with Pixspot?

The Pixspot site seems to be working OK but Pixspot images on DSLR Users are just coming up with a message to view images at Pixspot. At least for me they are.

Does anyone know if this is a permanent change

I think it's about time I ditched Pixspot completely and just used my SmugMug account. It's getting less and less reliable and now hot linking is blocked - well that takes the cake. I'm still seeing this message on all Pixspot images - even ones that would be in my internet cache

You can always grab the Dreamhost yearly deal that Scott has made available for 20-odd bucks for the first year and that'll give you 4.8gb of storage.

this blocked linking affects plenty of us, especially the newbies to it all who havent got a smugmug account yet or who are perhaps testing the waters as far as whether they wish to go down that path or not and merely wish to post a few pix for comments or assistance.

Whilst you can still see the image by cutting and pasting it is still a major pain in the arse.
Couple that with the fact that the service has been slow or otherwise unreliable for a while now. ( I suppose we are getting what we pay for though )
I suppose that this may well be a case of us being a victim of our own success. many new members here all browsing posts and generating excess traffic for pixspot....

Unfortunately Steve, I think your last sentence sums it up. Christine has been very generous with setting up the Pixspot site for our free use. Yes, it seems to have had it's problems over the year, but remember it is still free.
The only suggestion I can make to those who may be 'pissed off' is to remember how much they are paying for the service, and perhaps think about finding a more suitable longterm solution.

I think most ISP's include a limited webpage facility in their deal. Perhaps those not up to setting up on smugmug (or others) yet could make use of their own bandwidth

For Christine to block hot linking there is very likely to be a bandwidth issue.

For my own part I don't hotlink to a forum such as DPReview where it is possible that any one thread may get hundreds or even thousands of views on a forum of such size. I have noticed that some members have done this and the result can be bandwidth usage of a lot of MB even if the image size is only a couple of hundred kb - multiple images are worse.

It all comes down to the respectful use of resources that someone else has paid for. Christine has been very generous setting up a free use gallery but that generosity may have been abused.

I have not forgoten the possibility that growth, both on this forum and pixspot, has affected bandwidth usage.

I guess we will not know for certain what the issues are until Christine comments.

FWIW, my opinion is that Kristine has been very generous and if pixspot has inadvertantly become a victim of this forums success, then we owe to Kristine (where possible) to use a different method to show our images on this site.

As Leigh mentioned earlier, if you have webspace available elsewhere then use that instead. I actually have a dreamhost account, but admit to being lazy and using pixspot I'll refrain from doing so in the future and everyone who has spare space with their ISP or a smugmug,pbase,etc account should do the same.

Let's leave pixspot to those that have no other option and that way it as well as this forum will function much more smoothly

I agree with John. I stopped using PixSPot about 6 months ago except for the odd image with the bulk going on my SmugMug site. Largely to limit my impact on the site, but partly because it was getting slow and flaky.

I have just tried to upload some pictures via Pixspot and like other people have had trouble. Have we found out if this is permanent problem or just a temp. one. Maybe I should get a Smug Mug account.

Heath, When I joined I used a code I found on the net to get the USD$97.00 discount, but now that I have an account with them I think I can generate a discount code of my own. I have to do a few things today but I'll investigate it later and get back to you if you want one..

I really recommend Flickr. Their basic service is free but I don't know how much upload you get with that.

I bought a "pro" account which gives me 2 gig/month uploads with unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth for $24.95 a year ($2 a month).

They have a nice little slideshow thing that you can do to show your photos.

They were bought out late last year (strange saying that as it was only 2 months ago) by yahoo! for something crazy like $1 billion so I'd say you can be assured of their top service. And if you have a yahoo! account you can log in to flickr already.

Anyway hope that gives you a little more choice.

Move along, nothing to see here

Actually just uploaded a picture to my dreamhost account and making sure it views properly here. It's the first pic I took with my newly arrived Tokina 12-24 (taken at 12mm) of my backyard. A not-so-scenic reminder that I have to do a bit of gardening FYI, the lens works fine although you can see a bit of perspective error in the timber posts on the right hand side.
