Where are all the Canon / pentax / minolta users?

Postby ipv6ready on Sat Dec 24, 2005 7:10 am

Just wondering..as i used to enjoy reading about canon gear and the variety it offered this forum.

Also what of pentax or minolta DLSR users?

I am a nikon user....but no guranteee that is forever. But the investment in glass would make it hard to switch. And hard to justify for me at least as i don't make money out of photography.

But its seems most canon users have left this forum? A pity since this site is now a DSLR forum not just a d70 / nikon forum.

Or is it just me?

Left? The only one I can think of that has left is rjlhughes. Now we also have DionM, DaveB and Wocka posting regularly, petal666 has always been here, sheetshooter has a 5D and yeocsa is now a 20D user. There's probably more that don't immediately come to mind too; if anything we've gotten more Canon regulars since the move to dslrusers.

Shane Gerrish is also a pentax user and has just joined, and Hilux99 is another Canon user.

Actually, I would prefer the Olympus 4/3 third system. Unfortunately, Olympus has been slow to introduce pro grade bodies like E1 and the lens are so few and too expensive.

The KM's also interest me, but the lenses are few in number too.

Also, I'm a broke Nikon user.

I haven't left. Not that it matters, the parts of this forum I'm interested in have just been quiet recently...

Well, for what it is worth, I had a foot in both camps - with an EOS 5D and a D70s and I have just flogged the Nikon and lenses and am all Caonon .... for digital that is.

My interest in photography, especially in discussing photography, resides in the product — the photograph. The skills and perception of the photographer are all that matter, or should matter, and their choice of weaponry is as irrelevant as the brand of computer or typewriter a novel may be written on.

Sadly there are some poor pathetic kit-struck contributors who have to bring recurring attention to what they use or to have sly digs at non-Nikon manufactured goods. That, along with the segregation inferred by a Canon Corall makes non-Nikon users feel either excluded somewhat (I know that in the eyes of Admin they are not excluded) or to feel that there is little point.

I guess it is also worthy of note that Canon is the biggest seller in the DSLR market globally and yet that would not seem the case by the sway of discussion here.

I suggest that all do as I do and just forget it and get on with what's important.

Cheers,

Sage words there Petal666,

Watching and waiting is the essence of photography because what separates the good from the lame is knowing when NOT to press the button.

How did you go flogging those lenses, by the way?

Oh yeah, should take the 15mm fisheye from my signature. Wish I'd kept that one, it was such a nice lens, but I had to cover some of the cost of my 135f2 L

Hmmm, the 135mm f/2 is a wonderful lens, though. I have always loved the focal length (on 36x24) although it has had a long period of unpopularity.

I used mine yesterday on some shots in the bush and it was just wonderful. Likewise the 90mm TS-E which, if anything, might even be sharper.

I'd have to agree with SheetShooter. This forum comes across as a little intimidating at times for a newbie like me. I’d say the hardest part of my induction to DSLR, is trying to understand what people are talking about, yet when you ask a question it is mostly biased in one direction. That is understandable being originally a Nikon forum.

Hopefully this will change when more Canon / Minolta and Pentax users join and contribute. I will admit I have strayed to other forums for Canon specific questions and equipment reviews as there just isn’t the numbers currently on this forum.

Cheers

Wocka,

At the outset let me say how much I love that term Three Fiddy D!!

I think we all have to ignore the prejudices (whatever bias they may be based on) and ask the questions we seek answers to here. Only by increasing non Nikon-specific traffic can we broaden the discussion and make a more inviting experience for users of ALL marques.

I have had a look at a couple of Canon-specific sites (moreso prior to purchase) and have to say that EVERY kit-centric discussion board is pretty much a waste of time. Once the tribalism of marques subsides another bout of segregation erupts based on 'L' vs 'Non-L', 36x24 vs. crop, and so forth. Seemingly there are many who are in the world of photography for the intoxication of possession rather than the production of pictures.

That is not to say that 'kit chat' doesn't have its place. Photography may well be about pictures and their power to communicate but in order to get to the point of mastering the tools in your possession it is necessary to discuss and learn the ins and outs of a duck's bum about the kit you own, or perceive that you NEED to own.

From the viewpoint of technical assistance and opinion the presence of a Canon specific section makes just as much sense as a Nikon, or Pentax, or Olympus, etc. section. It has been discussed at length in the past as I recall and it is an administrative night mare and so we are blessed with this resource as it stands - which is none to shabby by all accounts.

Cheers,

if you didn't have all that best brand discussions you would lose a lot of fun from the good natured stirring [as well as a small percentage of the sadly serious ].
Finding out the good points and bad points might sway people to find a better system to suit them selves.
specific forums also bring out the bad points more than would be bought out in an open forum.
Finding out which is the best lens etc can save you a heap of money in the long run and allow you to use a better product to start with so you can grow into it as a photographer.

i think that the most important thing in any forum is not the brand segregation but the experience segregation.
scareing away newbies by making derogatory comments about inexperienced people is an all too common thing in a lot of forums i have glanced through.
I consider myself a newbie having only been "into it" for a year but the people over at the Dpreview Pentax forum have helped me immensly to understand my camera and the various lenses... they are a fun and friendly lot.
I still have a lot to learn about capturing the actual images and getting as broad a view from as many people as possible irespective of brand is the next step for me.
I hope to learn a lot from this forum while having a heap of fun at the same time.

i'm a canon user, but like what petal said, i prefer just to read and watch, i do sometimes feel a little intimmidated as the majority of users are nikon users (seeing as though this was a d70 forum).

I for one have enjoyed many posts here, and love to read peoples/comments/views/techniques where i can learn from.

Petal, hows the 135L? Is it worth getting or is it too long for the 20D, i'm thinking either 135L or 851.8, i think the 135L is going to be too long, plus i should be able to get by for now with the sigma 150 i have, but that damn 135 sure does look good. Did you import or purchased locally?

Wouldn't it be nice if birddy could get some nice canon glass in the lens lust thread :)

I wish my Nikon glass worked on a Canon 5D. I'd buy one in a flash.

It is a shame we live in such a competitive world. It would be nice if Canon and Nikon got together and produced a lens mount compatible with both brands of camera, so we can choose the best of both.

Cameras come and go but great lenses last much longer.

think about the olympus users, 4/3s system is so limited

I'm happy with the quality of the lenses however

If it not broken don't fix it :) As an E1 user, many are waiting for the upgrade but the E1 still can hold its own. The E300/500 offer a 8meg option but not to the build standard of the E1.
Lens 7-14mm, 8mm(soonJan06) 14-54mm, 14-45mm, 40-150mm, 50-200mm, 11-22mm, 50macro, 35macro, 150mm, 300mm, plus an adaptor to use any OM lens in manual. Also a x1.4 convertor and a 25mm ext tube. Thats a fairly good range of lens.

Killa, your lenses can work on the Canon mounts. All you need to do is purchase an adapter ring (the Canon mount is a larger diameter than Nikon), you will have to manually focus though. I am thinking of getting one because fozzie has been generous enough to offer the use of his macro lenses if I do.
Here are a couple of links to explore
http://www.camerahacker.com/Novoflex/EOSNIK.shtml

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-Nikon-Lens-A ... dZViewItem

http://www.outbackphoto.com/the_bag/pau ... essay.html

These will give you the basic rundown...

As to the original discussion, I have been fairly active on this board and joined when it was a Nikon only site. Never experienced any problems and have enjoyed the friendly banter but of course that is because I believe it is you who takes the photo and your equipment counts for nothing if you dont know how to use it.

Big V - Nikon micro/macro lenses offer still in place.

Time is marching on, so it is now time to get the adaptor and enjoy the micro world while you are still on holidays 8)
