TC-16A TeleconverterHi Everyone,
I recently picked up a TC-16A Teleconverter at a garage sale thinking it would be a handy item in the kit. Not ever having used one before i thought it wise to do some research on compatability before just throwing it on the D70 but to be honest now I'm more confused Can anyone tell me if this item will work with my D70 and any of the lenses in my sig below? TIA Tony D70 18-70mm Kit Lens, Nikkor70-300mm ED, Nikkor 50mm f1.8, Tamron 70-300MM F/4-5.6 LD MACRO 1:2, Sigma 28-200 1:4~5.6, TC-16A AF Teleconverter, SB-800 Nikon F60 Film Body.
blaize,
TC-16A Teleconverter won't work on any of your lenses in your sig. It'll work with the D70 in manual and with MF lens. Birddog114

Thanks for that Birddog, I guess this means i have a TC-16A for sale Cheers Tony D70 18-70mm Kit Lens, Nikkor70-300mm ED, Nikkor 50mm f1.8, Tamron 70-300MM F/4-5.6 LD MACRO 1:2, Sigma 28-200 1:4~5.6, TC-16A AF Teleconverter, SB-800 Nikon F60 Film Body.
That's very much in line with what Nikon says, but is it really true? Nikon's own statements of incompatibility have had a history of being vague, if not misleading. Are they stating the obvious ("AF lenses won't auto-focus on this TC"), or does it mean AF lenses cannot be mounted without destroying either or both (and souring all the milk in your fridge and scratching all your CDs)? I'd be keen to have a look at/play with one of those beasts for myself...
That's another interesting statement. As far as I know, the D70 refuses to meter with non-CPU lenses (please correct me if I'm wrong, but this fact made me hold out for a good deal on a second-hand D2). If the D70 will meter with the TC16A, does it mean the TC has a CPU? It sure has electrical contacts... If the D70 does meter with this TC, and assuming AF lenses *can* be mounted (I'm pretty sure they can) then it may be useful after all. All you'd have to do then is manually pre-focus the lens to a suitable range and let the TC16A do the rest. Plus, you've got yourself a pretty good 1.6x TC. Cheers Steffen.
I just follow the guidelines from Nikon, working or not working is up to you, you can try it with your lenses and find out, btw I don't have it so I can give you any affirmative.
The D70 doesn't meter with MF or non-CPU lens, you have to manually meter and play around with non CPU or MF lens, and the TC16A has no CPU but it can be used with MF lenses and manually meter with the D70 as said earlier. You can shoot with any AI or AI-S lens on the D70 and manually meter yourself or using the lightmeter. Birddog114

Thanks again Birddog,
I read a thread on a US forum, can't rememeber which one They said that the TC-16A and others are mechanically keyed to not work with the AF lenses that I have and may even damage the TC if fitted. I'm not sure how accurate this is but I think i will play it safe and not use it!! I will probably offer it up for sale in the the "For Sale" section soon as i can't see myself getting any AI or AI-S lens soon cheers Tony D70 18-70mm Kit Lens, Nikkor70-300mm ED, Nikkor 50mm f1.8, Tamron 70-300MM F/4-5.6 LD MACRO 1:2, Sigma 28-200 1:4~5.6, TC-16A AF Teleconverter, SB-800 Nikon F60 Film Body.
Blaize, I have the TC16A and can confirm Birddog is right, it will not work effectively with the lenses you own. It will work with the D70 in manual everything mode, but requires the right lens in front of it.
Most TC work best with prime lenses only, usually only very high quality zooms such as the 70-200 VR will work effectively with a TC. Steffen, the TC 16A will take AF lenses, but as stated above, really is best suited to long primes
Thanks for that Glen........ I will post it up for sale in case someone else has a use for it.

Hmm, can't stop thinking about this TC...
It would obviously work well on a D2H, since that one will meter with anything (or even nothing) attached. The only thing is, I can't really come up with a good excuse for buying it. The 1.6 factor doesn't seem to open any interesting perspectives in combination with the lenses I own. The one slightly interesting combo would be with the 135mm f/2.8 AiS, which would give me a quite compact 216mm f/4.5 almost-AF. However, I've already got a 180mm f/2.8 AF... Another worthwhile match could be the 50mm f/1.2 Ai, giving an 80mm f/2 "AF". Then again, I already have an 85mm f/1.8 AF. How much are you asking? Cheers Steffen.
Steffen, Get it and try on all your lenses! I don't see any fruitful results there! but worth a try if you want to do it. Birddog114
