Lens Cleaning Tissues

Postby wmaburnett on Tue Jan 03, 2006 4:45 pm

I wear eyeglasses and use this disposable lens tissues that say non-scratching, the brand I use would be nice’n clean (http://www.nicepak.com) and were wondering if they would be safe to use on my lenses. I just figured I might want to give them a try because they are convenient and leave no streaks,
Thanks! :D

I'd use fine fibre cloth that is supplied by optometrists. Lens tissues are not as harmless as they are portrait to be.

What ever you do don't get too enthusiastic when rubbing the lens, the lens coating is not hardened. Use the copper hill fluid.

Neither fingerprints nor cleaning marks will have an impact on image quality in most cases (not too stopped down aperture). Cleaning marks will have an impact on the re-sale value of the lens, though. Therefore I go soft on cleaning and use a microfibre cloth and a bit of breath, *after* a good giotto blast.

Cheers
Steffen.

I'd definitely stay with using the micro fibre, anything else can be a risk of removing the coating on your lens.

I bought one of these, love it. Good service from Quality Camera as well. I would use the micro fibre cloth the most. Only if I happen to put some bad finger smudges on the lens do I use the lens cleaner fluid, good to have when you do need it.

Micro fibre and used Pec Pad after CCD cleaning are my uses for lens cleaning, put an UV filter on the lens when they're not in use is also a safe bet to keep the front element cleaned.

I usually use my T-shirt or a clean hankie or my sweat towel!

Any clean soft rag is better than a tissue.

I work on the theory my shirt, towel and handkerchief are washed and clean every day a lens cleaning cloth can lie around collecting crap for ages :-)

I also work on the theory I will wreck the lens long before I wear it out by cleaning it.

Clean cloth not tissue!

Me too....I purchased the complete dSLR cleaning kit from them and it is fantastic.

I also 2nd Birdy's advice and always have a UV filter on the front of my lenses, so I'm really only ever cleaning the filter....not the front lens element. With this being the case, there's no need to be overly paranoid. If worst comes to worst, you're up for a new UV filter.

They would be fine to use on your camera lenses. The main thing is to make sure you remove any dust with a blower brush first...that is vital!...and never use tissues made from timber products such as the ones you buy to blow your nose. The fine timber splinters could scratch the lens coating.
