Suction Mounts ?G'day fellas,
I was wondering if anyone on here has used these types of mounts before: $35US from this site: http://www.rtsphoto.com/html/cullm2a.html Im interested in using that type of mount, on the side of a car, to achieve these types of photos: http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/7882/sl0614mb.jpg Ive been searching online(mainly eBay) but i cant seem to find any shops that sell that sort of item... any help or advice would be much appreciated in finding one of those Thanks Shane Last edited by sikx5 on Wed Jan 11, 2006 1:08 pm, edited 1 time in total.

The operative word here is "suc"! Take care and consider a window mount, available from a number of sources. Do you want to trust a D2x ($5000US) and a 200-400/2.8 ($5000US) to the device you picture here? I'll pass.

Thats what ive been thinking about, but to get that sort of photo, delay the shutter for 1-2sec, and do around 4-5km steadly, so i could be running after the camera with a hand underneath just incase...i know it sounds dodgey, but would like to give it a shot. - Nikon D70 -

With that sucking mount is real "suck", you don't want to see your camera lies on the bitumen and in pieces, won't you? Go for proper products as: Kirk, Wimberley, etc... Birddog114

wow... nice shot but I dont think I would trust one of those!
ps... you may want to check the FAQ and remove the pic in your sig! D4, D700, plus glass from 14mm to 200mm

Shane,
Manfrotto make some very decent mounts, both suction, and clamps, that will work for this type of thing. I'd be looking at the clamps, however, and also taking into serious account the weight of the gear I'd be mounting on the clamp. Also, please review the size and authorship of the images that you post here: Was this example image one of your own authorship? If not, then you need to post it as a link to the original location only: the only direct linking permitted here is for images that you create. This is covered in the FAQ. Regarding the size, please be respectful of those who do not yet enjoy broadband connections, and restrict the size of your postings to a maximum side size of 800 pixels. Finally, please ensure that you remove the graphic from your signature. These are explicitly banned: they serve no useful purpose whatsoever, and actually detract from most users' experience here. This too is explained fully in the FAQ, and perhaps this might be a good time for you to spend a few moments reviewing its contents. Thanx in advance for your cooperation in these matters. g.

thanks alot for the replys fellas.
Sorry about the sig, and size of the image, i wasnt aware of those rules. Fixed now though . Thanks for those suggestions, i was looking through the ranges they have, stumbled across this one: http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/cache/of ... id=liv2415 Cant seem to find any clamp type mounts, still looking though. Just need to find a dealer, would anyone be able to recommend any good online camera stores ? Thanks. - Nikon D70 -
very interested to see how you go as i am interested in the same sort of photography, so good luck and i will be looking forward to your posts.
not trying to hijack your post, heres a couple i took of my mates cars hand held. Planning on doing another shoot when i get my hands on a D200. you get what you get, always learn from the mistakes
Very cool photos there mate !!
Im trying to get some of those shots out as well, still having trouble doing the panning shots though. here are some pics i took towards the end of last year: http://www.dslrusers.com/viewtopic.php?t=13213 - Nikon D70 -
you had a little bit better subjects to shoot there
as for pan shots, what i find easy is to face the point (pretty much point your feet in the direction) where you want to take the photo and use AF-C with your D70. Move with the subject say left to right or right to left, but when you have taken the shot flow the car through. Using multiple shot helps so you can just pick the best one. this is a shot that i took up in darwin last year, it noticed that he was hitting the curb, so just set myself up there for a couple of laps. you get what you get, always learn from the mistakes
Look for the Manfrotto Superclamp. Note that, like all Manfrotto parts, it's just a component of a system, and you'll still need a head of some sort. And try vanbar.com,au g.

dont use suction cups as they have no holding power at all. you want vaccuum cups. to get that kind of shot like in the first pic you'll need a bit more distance away from the car. many car photogs make their own crazy car rigs and are very secretive about how they make them and their shooting techniques. i'd show you my rig but then i'd have to kill you. to get started on your rig get your base parts from here http://store.yahoo.com/cinemasupplies/succupmoun.html
oh and if your worried that your camera might fall why not just get insurance? checkout the pics from this ozzy car photog for some inspiration. http://www.eastonchang.com/
if you like that check this guys site. used to shoot for tuning werks magazine. awesome pics. awesome post processing. however not aussie. http://ruji.net/
Thanks alot for for the replys fellas, much appreciated.
Mate, that is absoultley the item i am after, its perfect, thank you so much for directing me there !!!! Just one small problem....They dont do international credit card orders, . Its got my started though, i know what to look for
Ive seen that blokes site before, some amazing photography, thats where i have been getting my ideas from, i love his work !!
Thanks for that link also, i lost that fellas link, i saw it once but i didnt bookmark it. Some amazing photography for sure...look at the price he charges as well
hahaha me too, i cant wait till i get my hands on one of those mounts cheers shane - Nikon D70 -
Where's the problem? Most of their stuff is just stock Manfrotto gear, which you can buy here. Bogen is just the name that they use in the US, for some strange (typical unfathomable marketing) reason. The rest is simply some extra stuff added to the Manfrotto stuff, but if you look closely through their cattledog, you should be able to work out what you need and just buy it locally. FWIW, the mini ballhead that they use in some of these items comes as an option with the Manfrotto tabletop tripod, and it's quite good. g.

When you think about it companies like Manfrotto don't usually bring things out unless rigorously tested Having said that - my gear on a suction cap - like hell, unless i've also araldited the thing on the car body as well.
cheers marco
I am using one of these atm..... http://stickypod.com/stickypod_propak.html
Its a friend of mines and he let me borrow it while he is overseas for a few months and ive only had one chance to have a play with it so far. Over all it is quite good and the suction is fantastic. Jamie
