Melbourne zoo today
I went out to the zoo this morning to have a play with some different meetering methods (spot and center weighted), here are some of my results.
All taken with Nikon D70s and 70-300mm G type lens (The more i use this lens the more i hate it, but its the only one that i have with enough reach ).

Jamie good shots. Can I ask what you don't like about this lens? I have one though I rarely use it. I find that with a tripod or practice with a monopod it turns out excellent shots. Expecially since you are using the DSLR which means using the "sharper" center of the image circle of the lens. I presume you use this a lot more then me as I also have a Sigma 70-200mm EX. I like the first pic the best The oranatung is nice as well. but it would of been better if the mother looked towards the camera as well. my only grip I'm back

Jamie, these shots are great and would not tell what lens you was using i too have one of these and have taken some good pictures with it, i would not be complaining about these pics. Ok the lens is slow and also cheap, but for what it is, it does a fine job at all these sorts of static shots. Get to know it's limits and is very usable.

These shots are wonderful. I love no. 1 as well (meerkat) as it is well composed, great lighting and sharp. No.3 (Orangutan with baby) is also great and even though mum's face isn't showing it works due to baby looking at camera, suckling and playing with feet. Only slight criticism is that I wouldn't have cropped mum's head so much and the burnt out grass patch to the left, but these are minor. And you don't like this lens? For a non-pro lens, it looks good to me. I look forward to more pics. Well done!
great series of shots... particularly the 1st one. i would probably clone out the little bit of green foliage in the top right hand corner just to 'finish' it off.
