Purchasing lust scaleHi everyone
I have all the equipment i need to do phootgraphically what i have to minus 1 piece 1 85mm f/1.4 which will be a luxury buy now i have been browsing the forums for a while and it seems people think once you buy a camera you keep on spending buy new things but i must say i am at a stage now where i can draw the line with the gear i have now, i dont need a better camera or set of lenses got all th eaccessories i need so now I don't need to buy anything else for a dam long time, so that rule that purchasing lust scales can be broken just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat.
I feel I should be in the same boat Wendell. But it is tough to talk oneself that way. 58 noct, 28mm 1.4, 200 f/2 VR, 10.5DX... I can do without, but they are so much fun. I talk myself in and out of this all the time. Money invested in shares and property makes a lot more sense today.
EDIT - 85 1.4 is definately luxury - most clients won't tell the difference between this and you 70-200 VR HB
But Wendell you bought top dollar to start with. Many don't have that luxury hence the lust. eg you have a D2X and a 70-200VR which is no doubt on many a lust list.
Bet you haven't thought about the wonders of the 10.5 DX fisheye though and I know you've seen some of what it can do in my recent posts. Peter

yes Peter but i meant for my style of photography i am content with what i currently have and now only the 85 f1.4 eludes me, but the fisheye could trigger an interest as soon as nikon find a way to put filters in front of it you trying to start me off on another lust binge? i just started the thread because i know there is a definite lust scale rule that everyone follows here but i think i am over it or perhaps not, right now i am undecided Heath I know what you mean yup a noct and a 28 f1.4 o.k now i know i am not over the lust scale rule damn!
I see where you are coming from.
I think 1 more lens (20 1. and I will be mostly happy with my collection. Sure there are others I'd like, but the lust level is far less. Canon 20D and a bunch of lovely L glass and a 580EX. Benro tripod. Manfrotto monopod. Lowepro and Crumpler bags. And a pair of Sigma teleconverters, and some Kenko tubes. http://www.dionm.net/
Lust never sleeps.

Lust is never ending!
If you don't want to get involved or seeing you're over the limit then pls. do following things: - Don't ever never look or ignore at any bargain or tempted pricing anywhere, whether it's in the shop or in the NET. - Don't talk to anyone near you or on the NET about gears, lens, body. - Blind your eyes with black tape when you walk into any mini meets or photo meets. - Don't bother to search or finding any new/ old products as bodies and lenses. - Put all your spare cash into a locked up account which you can't immediate withdrawal. Then maybe you'll be safe with your current gears and be in controlled. Birddog114

I'm reasonably happy with my kit in that I can't justify the cost of moving from my 70-300 to a 70-200 or 80-200 and so.
However, I'm lusting after the R1800 (can probably justify). Also back into wanting some new computer parts. Would like to build a nice server/HTPC box, with lots of storage etc. Again, can't really justify. - Nick

Wendellt,
Nice to hear you back. Regarding to your question, for my type of photography I have got everything I need and dont plan to buy anything else. Unless I will jump into different subject and find that to propely complete a task I need extra gear. I am quite resistent to a lust Regards, K.Polak
Is that resistance able to be bottled in commercial volumes?? I think you'd make a lot of money from it... Simon

Wendell, I've been thinking along these lines for the last few weeks too. After 12 months spent saving for and researching a D70s, I spent just a few weeks acquiring things like a tripod, filters, a bag and a reasonably inexpensive zoom lens for my new camera.
I'm all set for candid, landscape, lowlight and portrait photography as well as adequate surf and macro shots. I'm at the stage where if I have limitations with my equipment, I'm trying to work around it by being creative. Unless I was to start selling my work, I can't justify the hundreds or thousands required for new lenses. Mind you, reading this forum and seeing the great pictures makes it hard to be content with my gears sometimes. Nikon D70s, Nikkor 18-70, Sigma 70-300DG APO

Wendell, what about them studio strobes for further exploits into commercial photography projects (Tanje's still waiting for your ph call)?
For me the lust never ends, but luckily my bank balance is in no danger of exceeding the RRP of a 70-200VR, so it'll be a while before the lust concludes.
no one buys expensive strobe lights, most studio photogrphers rent equipment per job, but i wouldn't call a strobe light part of my essential kit
True, but when you get a bunch of Multiblitz heads and accessories second hand, you can't really say no. Rental prices are rip off compared to second hand, and you get used to your gear as well. With rental gear you better hope you get the same set each time, and probably have a few days rental to work it out before your first job! HB
Agreed and great ideas! I have recorded and archived all the names of members who's going to give up their lusts in photography gears. There're 30 or 60 min. sales in the near future, those names will be black marked, coz I don't want them to suffer as their wishes. Especially selling it to the partners...... Bob. .
An interesting point with regard to posts such as this, is that it is normally men that have lusts and this applies to everything

-------------------------------- I started my life with nothing and I’ve still got most of it left
I wear a 16hr anti lust patch on my arm. It's those damm 4hr other hours of the day that always get me. Lens lust is the new drug and I hope my children never catch what I have Just can't wait until the Doc bulk bills

Speaking as one who has little and has obtained even less this past year I'd say I have plenty of scope for huge lusts... generally been one to think long and hard before losing more blood... too many others in my household who manage to spend with ease
Gary,
It always seems to be the 4 hours while I'm with a video or photography seller. I'm sure there is a cure I just need to keep searching for it. However I would not know what life could be like with credit cars not maxed out ! mmmmmm Mark PS : Time for another pacth
Lust objects:
D200 18-200 SB800 This is for my switch to digital and the need to travel light at times. All other gear I own I am happy with. Problem for me is, building a house right now that is waaaay over initial budget restrictions! Maybe D200 in 3 to 4 months time and depending on other silly things wife wants for house. Yesterday she wanted a driveway. What for??? Mark
Woops what have i done, o.k i officially detract my position I am still in the throws of lens luist birdy blease don't black flag me, i owe a lot to you for gettign all my stuff and i hope in the near future i can purchase more, remember i am still waiting for my 28-70 f/2.8 Huynnie you saying i should take up wine collecting? alcohol and me don't mix Heath buying second hand studio equipment is more cost effective maybe for you since you have a lot of commercial jobs, me i only had 1 and don't anticipate gettign another soon probably 1 or 2 a year, i still shoot for cream and fashion shows for free, so renting is cost effective for me, till i take up photography full time which won't be anytime soon.
