Good question/poll Dug, but I'm not sure if this is the place to be asking it as MOST here are Nikon fans :)

Though, a nikon user. I would love to get a Canon to try it out, but alas everytime i have the money Nikon comes out with something that I have no need for but desparately want NOW.

As far as a pissing contest :D I love the fact Nikon and Canon are always pushing themself to "convert" the pros and sway the masses to each others camp. That way they keep churning out outstanding products "the bastard" which creates my only mental problem ->paranoia/lens lust.

Maybe we should petition Nikon and Canon to stop making new products for 5 years. PS: I never even chose Nikon as a old F2 system was given to me in my teens and ever since I have been loyal to Nikon.

I wonder how many here would think different about the other camp for the first purchase if they knew then what they know now....does that make sense?

Maybe we should petition N & C to use the same lens mount then all the pissing contests would disappear and we, the end users, would have the best of both worlds. :|

In fact, you can already use Nkon glass on a Canon body with the correct adapter, but why would you bother? You lose most of the fuinctionality that the camera has with the correct lenses.

And no, it's not possible to use Canon glass on a Nikon body: the distance between the mount and sensor/film plane on a Nikon is greater than it is on a Canon. That means that trying to use Canon glass on a Nikon body will always place the lens too far away from the focal plane.

But the truth is that both manufacturers make great glass, and it's still the person driving the camera that makes - or breaks - the images.

The cameras and glass are merely tools in the process.

Lemme get this straight.

You've made a poll that includes Olympus and Pentax, but it doesn't include either Fuji or Kodak even though they've been longer players in this game before either of those two.

I started off with an Olympus OM2n in 1979 or thereabouts. Got a 28mm, 50 mm and 135 mm lens. T20, then T32 flash, autowinder. Used most everything apart from the autowinder. 20 years later when digital cameras became "affordable" I bought a Nikon Coolpix 800 (which I still have). It came with a huge 8 Mb CF card. Not long after that my venerable OM2n + 50 mm was stolen so I researched the field and replaced it with a Nikon F80 with 2 kit plastic zooms . About 18 months ago the D70 became affordable so I got one with the kit zoom. The D70 is now in for repair because of a multiselector switch failure.

I've managed to take pretty awful shots with all of these cameras.:)

But..

I love the D70 for action shots
I love the CP800 because its good for candids and closeups, and because it's black, rather than silver.
I love the F80 for bringing me up to date with AF, shooting modes.
I love the OM2n because it was the first real camera I ever had..and it came with me from Sydney to Nepal, Thailand, Hong Kong, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Ireland, England, Holland, Belgium...and also Wagga Wagga, Griffith and Hobart.. In its time the OM system was amazing.

So..although I'm now hitched to Nikon system I still have a lot of affection for the old GF...:):):)

It's also worth mentionning that this website started as a forum mainly for D70 users, its old name was "forum.d70users.com"... So it's not really surprising most people here (including me) use a Nikon system. I'd guess that the D70 was actually the first digital SLR that manu of us bought.

hehe - coming to a site with a name like d70users.com and asking people what they use is a bit like going to a Ferrari website and asking what people think of the F430 - fantastic machine, but no-one is going to knock it.

and yes, I also use Nikon. Cheap Canon cameras feel just that - cheap. You need to buy a pro-Canon camera to get decent build quality, and that costs money. By contrast, any Nikon feels good in the hands.

Cheers

I know this :D have you never collected statistics for a proposal or study?

You only ever ask questions when you already know the answers!

I use Nikon but I am never sure whether or not I made the right decision. I still really like the Canon stuff and love my old G2. If I had enought money I would probably go for both, particularly when I can't be bothered pping.
