Hong Kong ShoppingAll,
I am off to HK for a week in a week. I hear that shopping for camera gear can be hit and miss.... Obviously if poon had a shop front i would go there..... Does anyone have any recommendations on where to go?
definitely worth visiting Mongkok in Kowloon, i found the best bargains there.
try to avoid shopping in tourist areas - eg. Tsam Shai Shu, Hong Kong Island. they often jack up their price to con the foreigners/tourists. my 0.02. D70s/D200; Tokina 16-50mm 2.8; 18-70DX ; 50mm 1.8 ; 80-200mm 2.8D ; SB600 + Stofen Omini Bouncer
If you give Poon a yell I'm sure he will let you pick up...

Hi Olrac,
I was in Hong Kong for the first time just before Christmas. I was in Tsim Sa Shui. I was very disappointed with the shops there. The prices were jacked up and stock was very limited. Their attitude was pretty ordinary also. One place in particular I couldn't contain myself and had to tell him to go away in short jerky motions. I did have a great time in Hong Kong as I'm sure you will also. However, before going I'd strongly suggest working out what you'd like to buy, do all of your conversions and have your homework well and truly done. I found Birdy's prices very competitive with anything that I saw over there and at least buying from Birdy you know you'll get backup if something goes wrong. Have a ball!! All I know, is that I don't know enough.....
Re: Hong Kong Shopping
I purchased my 17-55 DX from Wing Whing Photo supplies, on Sai Yueng Choi St in Mong Kok (just near one of the exits from the MTR station), no fuss, had lots of stock, good stuff.
Pls. note: a week in a week is Chinese NY there.
100% of business in HKG will be closed next Saturday 28/01 until the 6/2. Pls. also note: our Aussie do not celebrate Chinese NY here, but I do and overthere they'll do also. Doubt that many shops will be opened after Friday 27/02. Last edited by birddog114 on Fri Jan 20, 2006 3:16 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Agreed - Birdy is a legend. His price is unbeatable! Better off to buy stuff from him than shopping in o/seas.... Last edited by Technik on Fri Jan 20, 2006 4:26 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Will just have to have fun with what I have got....
Once it is over AUD$900 limit, it's taxable on the whole amount not just the bit over $900. It's used to be anything over $400 - the first $400 is tax free + if the tax is less than $50 then they are not that fuss. New system: $1000 = tax $100 Old system: $1000 = tax $60 (first $400 duty free)
