Camera bag essentials.I was cleaning up my camera bag when I noticed the extra amount of things / junk that I carry around with me that have nothing to do with taking photos. But they are things that I consider to be a part of my kit.
It got me thinking, what do you have in your kit that has nothing to do with photography but you consider an essential part of your bags contents and why? For me it has to be a packet of hayfever tablets. Why? Well often I work with animals that shed their hair. Some of it really gets up my nose. Hence the hayfever tablets. I also carry a full set of all possible video lead adaptors and connections. Also part of my work for television. What about you? Mal
I've got a camera, it's black. I've got some lens, they are black as well.
panamax tablets, film (yes film!), film carton ends (for FA window), old towel, dead batteries and some toys my son has 'posted' in there!
Mal, how big is your bag? (um camera bag...) Jonathan
I have the LowePro Magnum AW - it is what all of the TV guys use. Great bag with heaps of space for extras. Mal

That was one of the first things to go from my kit. Some lucky security officer at Kingsford Smith airport now owns it Mal

my lonely planet French/english dictionary never leaves the bag
i read it when i tire of reading the D2X manual and it's helpful when i'm in France also heaps of work related documents i carry around from work to home since i use my camera bag as my work briefcase too
Good thread, I always wonder if anyone else goes shooting with the 'be prepared' mentality!
I carry a small tube of sunscreen, panadol, camelbak bladder (fits where the laptop should fit) and some protein bars. It doesn't add a lot of weight, and can make the difference between being comfortable and not. 2x D700, 2x D2h, lenses, speedlights, studio, pelican cases, tripods, monopods, patridges, pear trees etc etc

Wow, I had no idea there are so many drug addicts here carrying paracetemol/hayfever tablets, etc. as part of their bag essentials.
For me, a container of water - either bottle or bladder (as in the Camelbak kind). Usually a first aid follows too. Plus 2 torches, 1 for emergency spare...
Perfect for in-laws I hear. ROFL Birdy! They're actually in case I forget my earplugs at *insert loud motorsport event here*, so I don't have do buy another blasted pair! Oh yeah, and what Birdy said.
As I do most of my photography on my own the only non photographic item in my bag is - a blow up doll

Mood lighting... I need a bigger bag, currently my Micro 200 can only just squeeze in my lens SB800 a 10 tissues and sometimes a torch. The poor SB-800 isn't even in the padded bit but has to ride on the outside
Nodabs - with this list, you're either a terrorist, or a serial killer! I'm thinking the "Metal Leaver" is a typo for a "Meat Cleaver" The plastic bags, bandages and cleaning kit complete the story, I think Cheers What's another word for "thesaurus"?
Hmm,
Swiss army knife Ear plugs for the drag racing Mozzie repelant, as they love my UK blood for some reason.. Baseball hat Suncream SPF30 Pen and paper Small compass Spray on band aid canister Maglite mini torch And of course some minty fresh chewing gum Nikon F80D, FM2n
RRS BH-55, 055XPROB Smugmug
Impressive list! Most of the time I also pack a camera body and a few lenses Cheers Steffen.
Hmmm, I wonder if it's the same security officer that has my expensive genuine swiss army knife Does the name Pavlov ring a bell?

I would definietly be very concerned about the Leatherman and how it arrived, all kinds of trouble could come of it

------------------------------------------------------- So many things to do - so little time.
This has been an intersting insight into some of the members of this forum.
I think we can tell a lot about someone by what they carry in thier camera bag! I would still love to hear what little extras some of the other moderators keep in their bags. Last edited by Mal on Fri Jan 27, 2006 8:43 pm, edited 1 time in total.

It's sometimes surprising what you find in your camera bag...
Aside from camera stuff, brolly, etc... Inset repellant (a must have!) Hand towel Tissues (nose ones as well as lens ones) Plastic pants (for rainy weather thank you!) pens and notepads 2xTorches (little ones that run on AA's) Little salt container (for leaches, YUK!) Munchies (sometimes fresh ones!) water bottle The good ol' Victorinox knife rubber bands and those twisty plastic covered wire things (handy) Aka Andrew
