D70 ProblemHmm. I'm getting a bit anxious about my D70. Over the past 4 weeks, even before I came to France I noticed that every so often. Probably once in maybe 200shots that the shutter release does nothing even though the camera is in focus, the visible and audible focus indicator is present, exposure meter is at 0. If I move around it still does nothing, occasional it will take the shot after moving, other times I will have to turn on and off. Has anybody else experienced this?
Also I swear before when I did exposure compensation +/- 1-5 stops I noticed the difference in the LCD. For instance a shot taken at 0 stop (ie. no exp. compensation) would look normal, then a shot taken at +5 stops would look really washed out. At the moment nothing is visible in the LCD display. I haven't tried viewing the compensated images on a PC yet.
Shutter release not doing anything is probably attributed to the focus priority of the auto focus single shot mode (as opposed to shutter priority of continuous). You claim the focus indicators are present, but if there are slight hand movements that may have unintentionally shifted the AF sensor away from the aimed target, it will procude the symptoms you described.
Exposure compensation doesn't work in manual mode. Check to make sure that your camera is not in M. Or any of the idiot modes for that matter - I don't believe the exposure comp function is available in anything other than P, S and A modes.

Re: D70 ProblemI had exactly same problem few times.
Once I was taking some macro pics it would shutter would "freeze" for no reason. Had to turn camera off, then on again. It did it about 3-4 times on that occasion. The only way to fix it was to restart the camera.
