RAW+JPEG

Does anyone shoot RAW+JPEG?
If so what are the pro’s and or con’s for doing so.

From what I can see, for me anyway one of the major benefits is speed. I have a rather slow old iBook that takes it’s time loading the RAW file into Nikon Editor for me to get a good look at it. By having the JPEG version, it will load much quicker and will show me very quickly if the photo is a keeper or not.

As far as negatives go it is using more memory and space but “what the heck”… What’s another memory card, or an extra hard drive worth these days.

sometimes i use that setting if your taking photos that you quickly want to give to someone,
for example if you shoot a social event and hte event organizer wants your pics right away, you just give them the jpegs which in most cases would suffice to get them off your back. Later you have the chance to edit the raw images and get right, then you can sell these fixed up versions to them later.

I've recently been using Raw + Jpeg, I don't mind reviewing the NEFs (though it can be slow at times) but it saves me doing a batch conversion to jpeg to provide for copies for others. When I back up my files to my photo archive I only back up the NEF, and skip the jpegs. I find it currently suits my work flow, I suggest it's up to the individual as to if it works for them.

Yep, I used to. For the positives you mentioned. The extra space is a very small additional for each shot, so that shouldn't really be a negative IMHO.

The dealbreaker for me was the D70's restriction of jpeg basic only when in the raw + jpeg setting. A basic jpeg is too heavily compressed and the artifacts visible makes it unsuitable for me. I take the additional step of batch converting the NEFs at the "good balance" quality level during download to 'puter, and use those as the preview pics.

You may also like to investigate downloading Nikon View to use as your NEF browser - it's alot quicker than Nikon Editor/Capture that's for sure...

RAW + JPEG BASIC SMALL is awesome. The Jpeg is a miniscule in size, and compressed well on the D2x (no artifacts)... a file that can be very handy, especially for screen display.

Especially if you are always giving copies to friends - moreover, many peoples computers overseas in my experience struggle with larger files.

Onyx I do use Nikon View, but to get a good look a the picture I use Nikon Editor. And this is what is the time consuming part.

I remember reading on this forum, just the other day, that the NEF's have their own JPEG built in, and with the right software (can't remember what was mentioned in the actual thread), you can extract this JPEG - which saves using the RAW+JPEG setting....

Not sure if this is 100% correct.....

I just did a quick search but couldn't find the original thread....sorry

Shame it only works on PC. My PC at work is a superfast mumma and I have no problems working with NEF files. It is just my old faithful Apple that is getting slow... Oh well I'll stick with RAW+JPEG .

Give me your D2X for a few weeks and then I'll be able to show you

The D70 can only save in jpeg basic when saving in Raw + Jpeg while the D2X can save in jpeg fine, normal and basic when saving in raw + jpeg.
