Printing Panorama'sGidday,
I have a panorama (90cm x 25cm @ 300DPI) that I would like to have printed. I'm leaning towards sending it to Digitalworks.net.au after the good comments from this forum. I remember reading a post here about the type of paper to use, I have tried a search, but the results didn't find what I was after. I'm sure I read a comment that a panorama was printed on Metallic paper cause it has less shine and would look better. I'm planning on having this image framed, either myself or professionally. What would be the best paper, Gloss or Metallic for this purpose and why? Cheers Warwick

I have always preferred a matt or pearl finish myself.
especially framed I imagine the glass would give the impression of a gloss anyhow. I have been wondering about the metal offerred by digital works also. maybe someone who has had one done would comment. pearl is a popular finish around this forum. lots of us use the ilford smooth pearl with good results. I print the SYdney panorama on metallic because of the shine it adds
Would depend on the print you're looking at doing. The metalic finish brings out the colours really nicely, but I can imagine there'd be pics that it wouldn't work for. I suggest you get a smaller version done on each of the different finishes available to see what works best *** When getting there is half the fun! ***
Thanks Avkomp & Sheepie,
I think I will go the Metallic option for the print. This is the Image I want printed. Cheers Warwick

Wocka, I've printed panos from Digi Works in matte and it looks fine. Haven't tried metallic yet but from what's been said about having more oomph with colours, definitely print that pano out with metallic The colours of the pano itself justify printing it with metallic.

Thanks PiroStitch,
I couldn't find a colour profile for Digitalworks on their website. How do you know your colour will be their colour? I could always call them, but interested to how you found their colour calibration? Cheers Warwick

Wocka, erm I didn't find out properly I just sent a test print and it looked fine I worked in sRGB and the print is slightly darker than on my monitor 'cos I'm using an LCD. So far things have worked out fine for me (tends to happen when I dont' think too much about the what if's and buts )

I have used Digital Works for panoramas and had lots of hassles and would not recommend them. There are other alternatives, but they are more expensive.
Update:
I have just received the panorama back from Digitalworks. As suggested it was printed on Metallic Paper and it looks fantastic. I couldn't be happier for my first large print with the 350D. The greens are just glowing off the paper. I also had some animal shots printed that I took at the Zoo. These are going to go on the wall for the nursery. These were done on standard gloss paper and again they look fantastic. I couldn't be happier with Digitalworks and their process and delivery time. They do Metallic prints on a Wednesday. I uploaded my images to them by 9:30am Wednesday morning and had them in my hand (in Sydney) by 10.30am Thursday. Cheers Warwick

Camera House Wollongong says they can do 2 x 800mm by 300mm prints for $99. So about $50 each.
How does that compare to DigitalWorks
GC
The panorama was 910mm x 300mm Metallic =$31.85 The animal shots were 910mm x 510mm Gloss =$21.30 Cheers Warwick

Wow! At that price I might give them a go.
